Reverence means: Even knowing about downfalls, one is fond of inferiority and does not engage in learning, thus causing downfalls. Therefore, one should respect the teacher and the rules established by him. Furthermore, ignorance and carelessness lead to minor downfalls, abundant afflictions lead to moderate downfalls, and disrespect leads to major downfalls. Depending on the difference in field and intention, there may also be various different situations. Therefore, one should diligently study what should be adopted and abandoned, even at the cost of one's life. As stated in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "A householder wearing ordinary clothes, whatever precepts I have taught, at that time those monks, those precepts will also not exist." This means that in this time when even the five precepts upheld by lay practitioners are not kept by monks, striving for precepts will have even greater results. As stated in the same sutra: "Whoever destroys the sacred Dharma and when the Sugata's teachings decline, practicing one precept day and night, this merit is far superior to that." Third, if the precepts are broken, they should be restored. This includes the method of confessing faults and the method of abandoning and then retaking vows. First, the method of confessing faults includes the general Mahayana method and the confession method of the Madhyamaka self-tradition. First, the general Mahayana method is: In the object of confession, before a Bodhisattva or a statue of Buddha who is not stained by downfalls, with remorse for past misdeeds and the determination not to commit them in the future, one prostrates respectfully, then asks for forgiveness, and recites: "I, a Bodhisattva named so-and-so, have committed such-and-such a fault. I, a Bodhisattva named so-and-so, confess and repent of the fault committed before all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions. By confessing and repenting, I will abide in happiness. If I do not confess and repent, it will not be so." Recite this three times and use skillful means. Second, the confession method of the Madhyamaka self-tradition is: Fearing falling into the lower realms and with great remorse, if one can directly see the noble Akashagarbha Bodhisattva, then one can confess directly to him. If one cannot see him directly, then one should get up at dawn, maintain cleanliness, face east, make offerings, and pray to the Son of the Gods, then confess one's faults, prostrate, and

Through reciting wrathful mantras and other methods, or until signs of purification of sins appear, one should confess. As stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "In a dream, in front of the noble Nāgabodhi, one should sit and confess." Also, as stated in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Three times during the day and night, recite the Three Heaps Sutra, rely on the Buddhas and the mind of enlightenment, and thereby pacify the remaining downfalls." Also, as stated in the Sutra of the Four Dharmas, all the sins of a Bodhisattva can be eliminated by the four powers. Therefore, in front of images and other sacred objects, offer whatever offerings are available, or take refuge in the Three Jewels, and never abandon the mind of enlightenment, this is the power of reliance; for the sins committed in the past, generate a strong regret like swallowing poison, this is the power of aversion; as an antidote to the downfalls, build images, prostrate, offer, circumambulate, recite, meditate, and cultivate emptiness, and strive to do good, this is the power of the antidote; and make a firm vow, even if facing life-threatening danger, never again commit these evil deeds, firmly establish this vow, this is the power of restraint from evil, these are the four powers. Secondly, the method of relinquishing and then re-taking vows: If one commits a root downfall and exceeds the time limit, one must relinquish the vows and re-take them. If one cannot find a virtuous friend to receive the vows from, then taking them in front of a sacred object as before will also generate the vows. In short, the teachings of the Madhyamaka school are: to give one's body, possessions, and all accumulations of merit to all sentient beings, and to protect them from decline, purify defilements, and increase them more and more. As stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "One should know here the key of keys that will not lead to downfall. What is the key of keys? It is to give one's body, possessions, and the merit born in the past, present, and future to all sentient beings, and to protect them and increase merit." It is also said that the root of all this lies in guarding the mind. As stated in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Those who wish to protect their vows should diligently guard their minds." And the method of guarding the mind is also explained in the same text: "Those who wish to guard their minds should strive to guard mindfulness and awareness, and not abandon them even at the cost of their lives."
