This is to establish (this view), as the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says, "Having transcended mere mind, one should abide in the absence of appearance. The yogi who abides in the absence of appearance will see the Great Vehicle." Therefore, (it is said). "There is nothing to be removed here." With this, there are three reasons for determining the nature, divisions, and views of Madhyamaka. First, it is the dharma that is free from the two extremes of permanence and annihilation. Second, there are three types: fundamental Madhyamaka, path Madhyamaka, and result Madhyamaka. The nature of the first is the basis for the path Madhyamaka to sever imputations. The example is all dharmas. The nature of the second is the wisdom in the continuum of a Madhyamaka practitioner who realizes emptiness. It has the same meaning as the view of Madhyamaka. The divisions are the object to be realized and the two views of the path that realizes. The first is the nature of dharma, suchness. The second is like the five paths of the Great Vehicle. The nature of the third is the unsurpassed enlightenment attained by the power of cultivating the path Madhyamaka. The example is the four bodies. Third, explaining the method of abandonment, which is the peak application of the path of seeing, there are three types: the path of no obstruction, the path of liberation, and the special path. First, as (the text) says, "That which is gathered by the forbearance of one moment is the path of seeing here." Its essence is the four forbearances, with diligence as the main focus, which are practiced by completely gathering the six perfections within each of the perfections such as generosity. Second, its essence is that the sixteenth realization is the actual one, and the other four knowledges that are in accordance with it are also. Third, there are two types: equipoise and subsequent attainment. The root (text) says, "Then, having entered into the samādhi of the lion's roar, one should contemplate the arising of dependent origination in accordance with and not in accordance with the system." That is to say, in equipoise, by abiding in the samādhi of the peak application of the path of seeing, having attained fearlessness towards the obscurations to be abandoned by the path of seeing, in the subsequent attainment arising from that samādhi, due to the cause of ignorance, the formations, etc., are in accordance with the system of defilement; when ignorance ceases, the formations also cease, etc., are in accordance with the system of purification; when old age and death cease, arising from the cessation of birth, etc., such as these, are not in accordance with the system of purification; old age and death arise from birth, etc., are not in accordance with the system of defilement, one should contemplate the arising of dependent origination.

This is to contemplate dependent origination. The twelve links of dependent origination are: Ignorance, because it obscures seeing things as they are; Action, because it plants the seeds of karma on consciousness; Consciousness, because it leads to the place of birth; Name and Form, because it holds the body; Six Sense Sources, because it perfects the faculties; Contact, because it experiences through the convergence of the three; Feeling, because it closely enjoys; Craving, because it gathers the future life planted by karma; Grasping, because it combines with each realm; Existence, because it makes the ripening of karma manifest again in the future life; Birth, aging, and death, which transmigrate for the sake of suffering, cause affliction. In the practice of the peak of the meditation path, there are two: meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment. The root is: In the nine meditative absorptions with cessation, having gone back and forth in two ways, the consciousness belonging to the desire realm, holding the interval of non-equipoise, entering absorption by transcendence, one and two, three, four and five, having transcended six and seven and eight, going differently until cessation. As it is said. There are two systems, the noble and the master's. The first has two: the application Lion's Gait and the actual transcendence. The first is: For the nine meditative absorptions with cessation, without any intervening, having gone up and down in two ways, compatible and incompatible, one enters into absorption. The second has three: just the actual, the differentiated, and the most differentiated. The first is: From the first dhyana to cessation, one enters into absorption by transcending each one, having gone in two ways, the first of the separated goings. The second is: From the remainder of that, having arisen from cessation, into the first dhyana, then into cessation, then transcending one into the second, then into cessation, then transcending two into the third, then into cessation, then transcending three into the fourth, then into cessation, then transcending four into infinite space, then into cessation, then transcending five into infinite consciousness, then into cessation, then transcending six into nothingness, then into cessation. Then transcending seven into the peak of existence, then into cessation. Here, after all eight absorptions, one enters with cessation, but one cannot with the ninth, because it is impossible to arise from cessation into cessation.
