First, one must not be attached to this life. If you are attached, it is like being attached to a mirage; even if you try to draw water from it, it will not quench your thirst. No matter how much you practice discipline, study, and meditate, if it is all for the sake of achieving the prosperity of this life, it will not become true Dharma. Therefore, 'One who abides in discipline, possesses learning and thought, should diligently apply themselves to meditation.' This means that one must first rely on pure discipline, and then listen to the Dharma. Then, contemplate the meaning of what you have heard, and cut off any additions or subtractions. After that, you must use listening and thinking to cut off additions and subtractions, and then meditate on that basis. Furthermore, in order to generate the intention to practice Dharma, you need to contemplate the difficulty of obtaining leisure and opportunity (Daljyor), and in order to make your practice more diligent, you need to contemplate death and impermanence. The first is the difficulty of obtaining leisure and opportunity: 'This leisure and opportunity is extremely difficult to obtain; having obtained this body, one can accomplish the meaning of life. If you do not accomplish benefit in this life, how will you ever obtain this leisure and opportunity again?' As it is said, in order to become the basis for practicing the pure Dharma, this body of leisure and opportunity is very difficult to obtain, so you must repeatedly think: 'Since I have obtained this body, I must practice the Dharma purely.' If we explain it in more detail, we can think about the difficulty of obtaining leisure and opportunity from four aspects: cause, number, analogy, and essence. First, from the perspective of cause, to obtain a pure body of leisure and opportunity, one must practice virtuous deeds such as keeping the precepts, and abandon all non-virtuous deeds. However, sentient beings in the three realms do little good and commit many evils, so from the perspective of cause, leisure and opportunity are difficult to obtain. Second, from the perspective of number, looking at the realm of sentient beings, hell beings are as numerous as dust particles, hungry ghosts are as numerous as blizzards, and animals are as numerous as the mash of strong liquor. Compared to these, obtaining a pure human body is very rare, so from the perspective of number, leisure and opportunity are difficult to obtain. Third, 'Like a blind turtle inserting its neck into a yoke floating in the great ocean, it is said that obtaining a human body is extremely difficult.' As it is said, just as a blind turtle living in the great ocean comes to the surface once every hundred years and its neck enters the hole of a golden yoke floating on the waves, although there are countless kinds of sentient beings, being born as a human is only a possibility, so from the perspective of analogy, leisure and opportunity are difficult to obtain.

Firstly, one should be separated from unfavorable conditions such as being born as a mute or in a remote area, and it is very difficult to have all ten favorable conditions. Therefore, one should meditate on how difficult it is to obtain such a human body. Secondly, contemplate the impermanence of death: As it is said, 'For all who are born, death is in front.' Therefore, one should meditate that since the end of birth is definitely death, one should quickly practice Dharma. To explain it a little further: contemplate that death is certain, contemplate that it is uncertain when one will die, and contemplate that at the time of death, nothing other than Dharma will help. The first point is: In general, all compounded things are impermanent, this is the nature of Dharma, and they must eventually perish. As it is said: 'The three realms are like autumn clouds, gathering and dispersing impermanently; the birth and death of beings are like watching a dance; the life of a person is like lightning in the sky, fleeting in an instant; life is like a waterfall on a cliff, flowing swiftly.' In particular: 'The physical body of the Buddhas, adorned with excellent marks, even the vajra body is not stable. What need is there to mention the bubble-like body, which is moving and without essence?' Even the fully enlightened Buddhas who have attained the state of immortality show the manner of passing into nirvana, what need is there to say that ordinary beings must die? One should think like this. As it is said: 'The great sages with five superknowledges, although they can travel freely in the sky, have not reached the place where they can enjoy immortality.' Therefore, no matter where one is born in the three realms, there is no place that can prevent death, so one must die, one should meditate on this. Because there are many causes of death and few causes of survival, one will surely die. As it is said: 'The causes of death are very many, the causes of survival are very few, and even those are causes of death, therefore, always practice Dharma.' Therefore, even those places, foods, and behaviors that are considered causes of survival sometimes become causes of death, so one should meditate that one will surely die. Secondly, contemplate that it is uncertain when one will die: Some die in the mother's womb, some die at birth, etc. Death can happen to anyone, young or old, this is obvious. Therefore, one should contemplate and meditate on the fact that the time of death is uncertain. Thirdly, when the time of death comes, no matter how strong or powerful, no matter how many relatives and wealth one has, no matter how brave one is, one cannot prevent death. At the time of death, nothing other than Dharma can help. If one practices Dharma during one's lifetime, one will not regret it at the time of death, and one will have confidence in being reborn in a good realm, and one will have peace of mind. Therefore, one must practice the excellent Dharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
