Regarding 'pho ba' (transfer of consciousness): It is said that there are air practice, 'pho ba' practice, initial 'pho ba', and three 'pho ba's. For air practice, sit comfortably on a cushion, placing the sole of the right foot against the left thigh and the sole of the left foot against the right thigh. Keep the spine straight and slightly tuck the chin. At four fingers' width below the navel, tightly bind with the 'equalizing mudra' (mnyam bzhag gi mu dras). Then, exhale and inhale about ten times to calm the breath. When exhaling, release the breath about one 'cubit' (khru), then inhale, holding the upper and lower breaths as much as possible. If unable to hold, slowly exhale through the nostrils. If showing this segment to others, it is said that they should be taught 'vase breathing' (rlung bum pa can). After practicing in this way, reach the point where the breath can be held. When the breath can be held, the teacher 'Speech Lord Fame' (ngag gi dbang phyug grags pa) would sit cross-legged, holding a mala in his left hand, and circle his right palm over his knee three times, then snap his fingers. Each time he snapped his fingers, he would count a bead on the mala, and see how many beads were counted in total. It is said that in practice, this is not very convenient, so one should have one's student or friend sit in front, and adjust the body as described above. If unable to hold the breath, give a signal by snapping the fingers. The friend in front will consider his exhalation, inhalation, and breath-holding as one 'air pocket' (khug pa), and count one bead for each air pocket. When the signal of snapping fingers is heard, stop counting the mala and see how many beads were counted. Generally, it is best to hold one hundred and eight air pockets, moderately hold seventy-two air pockets, and at least hold thirty-six air pockets. It is said that to perform 'pho ba', it is sufficient to hold the minimum number of air pockets. Practice until thirty-six air pockets can be held. This is air practice. Then, for 'pho ba' practice, it is said that practicing for seven days is sufficient. Also, adjust the body as described above, and seal the nine doors with nine syllables: at the crown of the head, visualize 'kṣuṃ' (藏文ཀྵུཾ་,梵文天城体क्षुं,梵文罗马拟音kṣuṃ,destroying), at the two eyes and between the eyebrows, visualize 'hūṃ' (藏文ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体हूं,梵文罗马拟音hūṃ,seed syllable), at the two ears and two nostrils, visualize 'yuṃ' (藏文ཡཾ,梵文天城体युं,梵文罗马拟音yuṃ,wind element seed syllable), at the mouth, visualize 'suṃ' (藏文སུཾ,梵文天城体सुं,梵文罗马拟音suṃ,protection), at the navel, visualize 'sm̐yuṃ' (藏文སྨྼྻུཾ,梵文天城体स्ँयुं,梵文罗马拟音sm̐yuṃ,swiftly), and at the lower gate and vajra, visualize 'kṣuṃ' (藏文ཀྵུཾ་,梵文天城体क्षुं,梵文罗马拟音kṣuṃ,destroying). Then, from four fingers' width below one's navel, along the three hidden channels upwards, at the junction of the three channels, visualize the king of mind—the letter 'ar', and strongly recite 'ka hig' twenty-one times, raising it along the twenty-one vertebrae up to below the skull at the top of the head. Then, exhale and inhale about twenty-three times, and rest. Again, strongly recite 'ka hig' twenty-one times, bringing it down to the navel. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Similarly, lift upwards, pull downwards, and meditate in six sessions each day. Between sessions, when engaging in physical and verbal activities, if kept at the crown of the head, there is a risk of violent or convulsive movements, so pull it downwards and place it at the navel. The signs of successful transference after practicing in this way are: eating more than before, feeling warmer in the body, experiencing a hot forehead, and feeling as if the crown of the head is about to split open. These signs will appear. The Lama said, 'Raise the wind and mind from the navel twenty-one times with 'Hik' (藏文:ཧིཀ,梵文天城体:हिक्,梵文罗马拟音:hik,汉语字面意思:sound), rest, and then lower it twenty-one times with 'Ka' (藏文:ཀ,梵文天城体:क,梵文罗马拟音:ka,汉语字面意思:ka), that is the measure of success.' The Lama said, 'Practice transference for about twenty years, then stop, and if you wish to transfer after forty years, it is permissible to transfer.' This is the practice of transference. Now, if signs of death appear, perform death deception. If that also cannot prevent it, and you are certain to die from illness, then perform transference. 'Transference, without seeing the signs of death. When death comes, without contagious diseases, etc., performing transference is the best.' Thus it is said. Arrange the Thangka of your own Yidam (root and branch tantras) in front of you, visualize the mind as the Yidam and Lama, invite them into the sky in front of you, adjust the body as mentioned above, and block the nine orifices with nine syllables as before. From the meeting point of the three hidden channels four fingers below the navel, the king of the mind, the letter 'A' (藏文:ཨ,梵文天城体:अ,梵文罗马拟音:a,汉语字面意思:without), raise it twenty-one times with 'Hik' (藏文:ཧིཀ,梵文天城体:हिक्,梵文罗马拟音:hik,汉语字面意思:sound), and lower it twenty-one times with 'Ka' (藏文:ཀ,梵文天城体:क,梵文罗马拟音:ka,汉语字面意思:ka), this is experiencing it. Then, at the soles of both feet, the armpits of both shoulders, visualize 'Yam' (藏文:ཡཾ,梵文天城体:यँ,梵文罗马拟音:yaṃ,汉语字面意思:wind) as wind mandalas. In the four directions of the four-petaled heart lotus, visualize 'Yum' (藏文:ཡུཾ,梵文天城体:युँ,梵文罗马拟音:yuṃ,汉语字面意思:water) as four wind mandalas. Then, as the wind stirs, with a roaring and crackling sound, turn the heart lotus, which was facing downwards, upwards, and visualize the king of the mind, 'Hum' (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum), residing within it, making a 'tek tek' sound. Visualize your own king of the mind, the 'A' (藏文:ཨ,梵文天城体:अ,梵文罗马拟音:a,汉语字面意思:without) residing deep in the navel, raise it above the twenty-one vertebrae by reciting 'Hik' (藏文:ཧིཀ,梵文天城体:हिक्,梵文罗马拟音:hik,汉语字面意思:sound) twice, and visualize the 'Hum' (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum) at the crown of the head as empty like an overturned vessel, then make a 'Har' sound, and like cutting a connecting rope, visualize it transferring straight into the heart of the Yidam. Then, clearly visualize yourself as the form of the Yidam. If transference does not occur in this way, then certainly transference will succeed on the twenty-third or twenty-fourth time. This is the explanation of practicing transference. Now explaining the oral instructions on forceful transference. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
