Because the experiential self-awareness (sva-saṃvedana) of inference (anumāna) is the same as the substance (dravya). These two are different in that they depend on the object of awareness (ālambana). Inference depends on the universal characteristic (sāmānya-lakṣaṇa) and becomes conceptualization (vikalpa), while self-awareness is established as self-awareness by depending on its own internal observation. Fourth, regarding sound and meaning: Generally, sound is divided into two types: the sound of a name and the sound of a class. The first is like the name 'Lhasbyin', which is used to refer to the name of the same entity. The second is like the word 'tree', which is used to refer to the name of many things of the same kind. 2-689 Such names and class sounds, in general, can be summarized into three types: sounds that contradict the statement and the referent, sounds that do not contradict the statement and the referent, and sounds that both contradict and do not contradict the statement and the referent. The first type is like the name 'shepherdess', which refers to a shepherd but only refers to a bird. The second type is like the name 'Omniscient', which refers to and is completely fulfilled by the Buddha. The third type is like the word 'ocean-born'. For this word, there are three cases: the statement and referent of the word 'ocean-born' do not contradict each other, the statement contradicts but the referent does not, and the referent contradicts but the statement does not. The first case is like a lotus that grows in water, because for it, the statement and referent of the word 'ocean-born' both exist. The second case is like a lotus that grows on dry land, because for it, the word 'ocean-born' does not exist in the statement but does in the referent. The third case is like a frog that grows in water, because for it, the word 'ocean-born' does not exist in the referent but does in the statement. After explaining the classification of sounds in general in this way, the word 'perception' (mngon sum), which is to be discussed now, is also a word with three cases of statement and referent. 2-690 The Sanskrit word for 'perception' is (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思)པྲ་ཏི་ཨཀྵ་,प्रति+अक्ष,prati+akṣa,对着+感官,prati+akṣa,对着+感官), which translates into Tibetan as 'dependent on each sense organ, therefore dependent on the senses'. For this reason, for both sense perception (dbang mngon) and mental perception (don rig yid mngon), the statement and referent of the word 'perception' both exist. For self-awareness (rang rig) and yogic perception (rnal 'byor mngon sum) of non-objective perception (don rig mngon sum min pa'i), etc., the word 'perception' only has a referent. For erroneous sense consciousness (dbang shes 'khrul ba), the word 'perception' only has a statement. Third, refuting misconceptions about the definition: Refuting misconceptions about the definitions of perception and inference will be explained separately. Third, explaining the means of valid cognition (tshad ma) that determine the characteristics of the definition, divided into two types: explaining self-determining valid cognition (rang nges tshad ma) and explaining other-determining valid cognition (gzhan nges tshad ma). The first is about the categories of definitions.

There are three divisions: The first is that knowledge which is newly non-deceptive from oneself is its definition. The second is self-certifying valid cognition, valid cognition that ascertains its own object, valid cognition that ascertains its own object of measurement, valid cognition that ascertains its own field of engagement, valid cognition that ascertains its own object of realization, etc., are of the same meaning. The third division has two types: division in terms of entity and division in terms of how ascertainment is led. The first has two types: manifest self-certifying valid cognition and inferential self-certifying valid cognition. The first has four types: sense direct perception, mental direct perception, self-awareness, and yogic direct perception. The bases of the first three are, respectively: sense direct perception apprehending form in the continuum of a person (藏文:གང་ཟག,梵文:Pudgala,梵文罗马拟音:Pudgala,汉语字面意思:person) who ascertains form; mental direct perception apprehending form in the continuum of a person who ascertains form; self-aware direct perception experiencing consciousness in the continuum of a person who ascertains consciousness. If it is yogic direct perception, it is necessarily self-certifying valid cognition. The second, if it is inference, it is also necessarily self-certifying valid cognition. The second way of dividing has three types: manifest self-certifying valid cognition appearing as efficacious, habitual manifest self-certifying valid cognition, and inferential self-certifying valid cognition. The first is like sense direct perception appearing as fire performing the action of cooking and burning in the continuum of a person who ascertains that fire performs the action of cooking and burning. The second is like sense direct perception apprehending fire in the continuum of a person who ascertains fire by the power of habituation to fire. The third and inference are of the same meaning. Second, other-certifying valid cognition has two aspects: definition and division. The first is that knowledge which is newly non-deceptive from others is its definition. The second division has three types: division in terms of entity, division in terms of cause, and division in terms of object. The first has three types: sense direct perception, mental direct perception, and other-certifying valid cognition that has become self-awareness. The examples are, respectively: sense direct perception apprehending form in the continuum of a person who does not ascertain form; mental direct perception apprehending form in that continuum; self-aware direct perception experiencing consciousness in the continuum of a person who does not ascertain consciousness. The second has three types: initial direct perception, direct perception with a cause of error, and inattentive direct perception. The first is like the direct perception of first seeing a calf in the continuum of a person who does not ascertain a calf. The second has two types: direct perception with a cause of error of doubt and imputation. The examples are, respectively: direct perception in the continuum of a person who doubts whether sound is permanent or impermanent. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
