If the body benefits the mindstream, it is because it is fundamental, but that alone does not prevent it, just as a vase etc. is burned by fire.’ The reason for saying this is that, for example, being born in the desire realm, form realm, etc., at some point, the body may benefit the subsequent mindstream, but it is not the immediate cause. Therefore, if a person's body is destroyed, the subsequent mindstream will not necessarily stop. For example, when a vase is burned by fire and turns to ashes, the previous fire may have helped the vase's hardness and redness, etc., but because these are not the immediate result of the previous fire, the previous fire disappears, and the vase's redness etc. will not necessarily disappear. That is what it means. Therefore, Dharmakirti believes that for the causal relationship of transmission and the causal relationship of co-action, it is not necessary to distinguish between following and not following, but it is necessary for the immediate causal relationship. However, I still have not found the confidence to solve this difficult problem, so further research is needed. If ‘establishment’ and ‘bliss’ are not necessarily ‘one substance’, then there is a relationship of inclusion between them. Sakya Pandita said: ‘By distinguishing between cause and consciousness, it can be determined whether they are the same or different.’ The meaning of this sentence is that two things that arise from the same material cause are considered ‘one substance’, and two things that arise from different material causes are considered ‘different substances’. For concepts, if they appear in the same way, they are considered ‘one’, and if they appear in different ways, they are considered ‘different’. After careful study, it is found that the oneness of ‘establishment’ and ‘bliss’, and ‘oneness’ itself, have some differences in the size of their scope. Because ‘establishment’ means arising, ‘bliss’ means existing, and implies cessation, ‘establishment-bliss-one’ means that arising, existing, and ceasing must occur simultaneously. Therefore, I think that even according to our own view, it must be admitted that body and mind are one substance, which needs further study. Therefore, I do not think that things that arise from the same material cause must be ‘one substance’, because if this is thought to be the case, it will lead to very absurd conclusions. For example, the third moment of form and the second moment of the perception of form will also become ‘one substance’, because the second moment of form is the material cause of both of them, the immediate cause of the first, and the co-acting cause of the second. In addition, the taste and present form of sugarcane will also become ‘one substance’.

Therefore, these two (body and mind) must arise from the same material cause, because the collection of materials establishes a relationship of interdependence. If this is admitted, then a relationship of self must be established between the two. Therefore, although body and mind arise from the same material cause, the doubt that they are the same entity has been eliminated. However, whether body and mind arise from the same material cause still needs further study, because knowledge in this area is beneficial. As the scriptures say: 'The mind depends on the body.' And, 'Even without the body, the mind can produce changes.' This shows that the mind is not completely independent of the body. Looking at the answers to these debates, it seems to indicate that body and mind do not arise from the same material cause. However, 'Because of the same cause, they exist simultaneously.' and 'Because of the cause of their joint action.' etc., looking at the answers to the debates, it seems to indicate that body and mind arise from the same material cause. So, how should it be understood? In fact, the meaning of the latter two treatises has already been explained. As for the meaning of the former two treatises, it is like this: The debate in the first two sentences is that if the body and mind are not the immediate cause of each other, then the body and mind should follow each other, which is contradictory. The answer to this is that the scripture does not say that the consciousness of the mind directly depends on the body, but that the body directly produces body consciousness, and body consciousness directly produces the consciousness of the mind, so the mind depends on the body indirectly. In addition, if the body is the direct cause of the sixth consciousness (意, yi, mental consciousness), then the scripture indicates that the body is the condition of mental consciousness, not the immediate cause of mental consciousness. Therefore, this explanation is sufficient. The debate in the latter two sentences is that it was previously said: 'The excellence and decline of the body, through the differences in the actions of wisdom, lead to changes in the excellence and decline of wisdom, etc.' That is to say, the retinue of mental consciousness, such as wisdom, etc., will change with the excellence and decline of the body, which is its immediate cause, but will not change with the change of the body itself. The rebuttal to this is, wouldn't wisdom, etc., become excellent when the body becomes strong through nourishment, etc.? The answer to this is that even in this case, the body does not directly help the wisdom of the retinue of mental consciousness, but helps indirectly. That is to say, by nourishing, etc., to make the body strong, the body... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
