Collection of Instructions by Rutuk Gyamtso LG23: One Hundred Misunderstandings of the Treatise on Valid Cognition 2-524 One Hundred Misunderstandings of the Treatise on Valid Cognition Through the division of scripture and reason, the wise attain realization. Herein are One Hundred Misunderstandings of the Treatise on Valid Cognition. Homage to the supreme emanation of the great intellect Mañjuśrī (妙吉祥,象征智慧的菩萨). Homage to the supreme blossoming of the compassionate words of Kunga Homage to the supreme lotus feet of the great victorious one Homage to the supreme one, taken upon the crown of my head with great faith. For the sake of those contemporary logicians, who spend their lives debating about 'pots' and 'pillars,' so that they might engage their minds somewhat in the great systems of reasoning, I shall open a small door of analysis, having abandoned the notions of attachment and aversion. I beseech the three lords of reasoning to bestow their compassion. 'If there is no aversion to this object, then it cannot be abandoned.' Regarding this, the following argument can be made: The desire associated with the eye-consciousness perceiving form, and its corresponding attachment, you cannot be abandoned by your antidote, because the principal object of your focus cannot be harmed. This pervasion (普遍成立的规律或原则) is accepted by that treatise (对方的论点或主张). The sign (作为推理依据的事实或理由) is established, because form is truly established. It cannot be accepted, because you are an affliction. If one with discernment were to say: 'Although the principal object of the desire focused on form is established, 2-525 the principal object of its cause—the clinging to reality—is not established, so it can be abandoned by abandoning that.' Regarding this, the following argument can be made: You are a consciousness that engages with the state of an object, because the form that is your principal object is established in reality. If you accept this, then you cannot be fundamentally reversed by another consciousness. This pervasion is established, because 'In nature, even if one strives, reversal does not occur.' This principle is established. Furthermore, the realization of a śrāvaka (声闻,小乘佛教修行者) trainee who is an ārya (圣者,证悟者), and the realization that is corrupted by afflictions, share a common basis. This realization cannot be corrupted by inverted afflictions, because you are 'non-harm and correct meaning; in nature, reversal does not occur.' This is the implicit meaning of the words 'non-harm and correct meaning; in nature' from the text, which directly reveals the realization. Because you are the realization that directly sees selflessness. It cannot be accepted, because you are the subject of the argument. If it is said that there is no such subject, then... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, that is indeed the case. The abandonment in the continuum of a Shravaka Learner Arya is also such, because there exists an abandonment that is concordant with the basis of the certainty of falling away due to afflictions. If that is not established, then knowable phenomena, that is indeed the case. Because the Sugata's (Thubwang) abandonment of self-interest in his continuum is perfect, from the perspective of being an abandonment that is well abandoned, it surpasses the abandonment of outsiders because there is no attachment or clinging; from the perspective of being an abandonment from which there is no turning back, it surpasses the abandonment of a Lesser Vehicle Learner Arya; from the perspective of being an abandonment that is completely abandoned, it surpasses the abandonment of a Lesser Vehicle Non-Learner. Because it has been shown that way. It is universally valid that if there is no abandonment in the continuum of a Lesser Vehicle Learner Arya that is certain to fall away due to afflictions, then the Sugata's abandonment is not shown to surpass the abandonment in the continuum of a Lesser Vehicle Learner Arya in terms of not turning back, because there is no clear distinction. The above reason is established, as it says in the auto-commentary of the Sutra: 'The meaning of being extremely beautiful is like a person with a good appearance. The meaning of not turning back is like a disease that has been completely cured. The meaning of being complete is like a vase that has been completely filled.' These three meanings also surpass the detachment of outsiders, and surpass the Learners and Non-Learners through the perfection of self-interest.' It also says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: 'Birth and faults are the cause of arising, it is said that they return again. Because the seed of the view of self is abandoned, it is indeed the case that one does not go back again.' Therefore, regarding the meaning of not turning back and turning back, some explain that there is a falling away from the blissful abiding in the visible phenomena in the continuum of a Shravaka Learner, while others explain that this abandonment is the meaning of a person with a continuum repeatedly returning in samsara like a seven-time existent, and not that there is a falling away from the abandonment in his continuum. Although I have heard these explanations, I do not think they are reasonable, because this is the occasion for showing the distinctions of abandonment. Furthermore, there is this fault: The fundamental negation exists, because the realization of the Sugata in the continuum of the Teacher—the Well-Gone One—from the perspective of realizing the suchness of the Four Noble Truths, it surpasses the intelligence of outsiders; from the perspective of being stable and not deteriorating, it surpasses the realization of a Lesser Vehicle Learner Arya; from the perspective of knowing all knowable things, it surpasses the realization of a Lesser Vehicle Non-Learner. Universally valid. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
