If there is no realization of the Śrāvakayāna (Hearer Vehicle), which is impermanent and destined to decay, then there is no way to distinguish the realization of the Thubwang (Powerful One, referring to the Buddha) as being more stable than the realization of the Śrāvakayāna. The above reason is established because the Savior (Kyobpa, referring to the Buddha) has confirmed it, and is steadfast, and fully understands all the differences. Therefore, the Buddha is said to be superior to outsiders and those who are still learning and those who have completed their learning. If, according to your view, this distinction is not based on the stability of realization, but on the stability of the person, then isn't this losing the meaning of the scripture? Please consider carefully! Furthermore, regarding the scriptures that say, 'The nature of the mind is luminosity, and all defilements are temporary,' these scriptures seem very profound and difficult to understand. Therefore, those with wisdom and merit should study them carefully. It should be analyzed as follows: In general, the sutras say, 'Profound, peaceful, free from elaboration, luminous, uncompounded.' And in the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra (Perfection of Wisdom Sutra), it says, 'Mind has no mind; the nature of mind is luminosity.' And in the Uttaratantra (Treatise on Buddha Nature), it says, 'The nature of mind is luminosity, unchanging like the sky.' And in the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra (Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras), it says, 'The mind is always considered to be self-luminous.' And in Asanga's commentary on the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, it says, 'That which is the self-luminous nature of the mind, and that which is called the proximate affliction of the mind, these two are more fundamental than virtuous and non-virtuous minds.' And in the Daśabhūmika Sūtra (Ten Bhumi Sutra), it says, 'When reciting the ten vajra words, it is self-luminous.' As stated, in the commentary on the Madhyāntavibhāga (Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes), regarding this point: 'The rest are questions and answers.' The question is: 'If there are no parikalpita (imagined) and paratantra (dependent) dharmas, then how can they be objects? If they exist, then the dharmas cannot be self-luminous.' The answer is: 'Like an illusion.' etc. Here it also says, 'The nature of the mind is luminosity.' etc. The term 'self-luminous' appears frequently in the Buddhist scriptures and treatises. Furthermore, in the tantras, it says, 'Sentient beings are Buddhas, but are obscured by temporary defilements.' etc. In the Uttaratantra, it says, 'Having temporary faults,' 'Temporary defilements empty the realm,' 'Temporary defilements do not make it an affliction,' etc. In the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, it says, 'That is a temporary fault.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'All actions are inappropriate,' etc. And here also, 'All defilements are adventitious,' etc. Many occurrences of being captured by the word 'adventitious'. Will these converge into a single understanding? Or does each have its own focus of understanding? Please analyze and inquire about this. Where is the one who dwells with the fearlessness to wield the tongue of speech? The emptiness of all phenomena being empty in nature is explained as 'luminosity' in the Madhyamaka treatises. The self-cognizance and self-illumination that purify dualistic appearances are explained as 'luminosity' in the Maitreya treatises. The delusion of dualistic appearances is indeed adventitious, as clearly explained in both treatises. Although this system is somewhat similar to the system of Je Tsongkhapa, it is difficult to explain it exactly as it is. Therefore, setting aside for the moment those elaborations that arise from other systems, let us examine the nature of this one as follows: The former aspect of this system argues that even if faults and attachments are abandoned once by an antidote, that abandonment will revert and degenerate from the antidote. This is because after abandoning the previously existing faults and attachments, a new path of antidote that did not exist before will arise. This argument is indicated by 'Even if transformed, other faults will arise'. And in explaining the answer to that, 'Consciousness is the nature of grasping objects,' etc., occurs. Therefore, it can be explained as follows: The noble path of realizing selflessness can abandon self-grasping, but that self-grasping cannot revert and cause the wisdom of realizing selflessness to degenerate, because the noble path of realizing selflessness is the nature or essence of the mind, and the other is not. The sign is established, because grasping what exists as existing is the nature or essence of the object-possessing consciousness, and the way the object-possessing consciousness grasps is the way it exists, which is the nature or essence of the object. However, the self grasped by the ignorance of self-grasping does not exist as an object, and the selflessness grasped by the wisdom of realizing selflessness is established in the way things are. Therefore, it is said: 'Consciousness is the nature of grasping objects, how it exists is how it grasps, what exists is its own nature, this also causes that to arise, this is its nature.' This occurs, and if the meaning is also clearly explained, then the noble path of realizing selflessness, in terms of its meditative equipoise, has entered into the nature of the mind, the nature of the mind is luminosity, this self-cognizance and self-illumination that is purified of the darkness of dualistic appearances. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
