The 'encompassing all' and the five matters (referring to the five matters of the Yogācāra school: appearance, name, discrimination, right knowledge, suchness) are these. There are two types of 'encompassing': the Abhidharma-samuccaya, which is common to the Lesser Vehicle, and the Mahāyāna-samuccaya, which is not common to the Great Vehicle. The so-called 'eight treatises' refer to: the Trimśikā-vijñaptimātratāsiddhi (Thirty Verses), which explains the fundamental tenets of the Yogācāra school; and the Viṃśatikā-vijñaptimātratāsiddhi (Twenty Verses), which explains its proofs. In the context of these two, if it is stated that all appearances are mind-only, then the norms of hearing and teaching, the norms of karma and result, and the norms of the five aggregates, etc., would be unreasonable. If it is said that all appearances are mind-only, then to answer these questions in order, the *Vyākhyāyukti*, the *Karmasiddhiprakaraṇa*, and the *Pañcaskandhaprakaraṇa* are explained. These five treatises are composed independently. The other three are composed dependently: if it is said that all appearances are mind-only, then the norms of the twelve links of dependent origination, the six perfections for one's own benefit, the four objects of gathering for the benefit of others, and the norms of the three characteristics, etc., would be unreasonable. To answer these questions in order, the *Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra-vyākhyāna*, the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha-vyākhyāna*, and the commentaries on the two *Madhyāntavibhāga* are explained. There are also some treatises not included in the *Twenty Verses*, such as the *Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses*, etc. Second, the Yogācāra commentaries that follow the path of reasoning include: The Yogācāra texts of the *Pramāṇasūtra* (Compendium on Valid Cognition), the self-commentaries on the second and third chapters of the *Pramāṇavārttika* (Commentary on Valid Cognition), and the texts such as 'Therefore, whatever is two thousand' from the *Abhisamayālaṃkāra* (Ornament of Clear Realization). The following explains how these treatises interpret the intent of the Buddha's words. Third, explaining the manner of interpreting the intent of the Buddha's words. These Yogācāra treatises interpret the intent of the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma in the following way: the first turning of the wheel of Dharma, the Four Noble Truths; and the second turning of the wheel of Dharma, the wheel of Dharma without characteristics, are both interpreted as provisional meaning (neyārtha) sūtras. The final turning of the wheel of Dharma, the well-discriminated wheel of Dharma, is interpreted as definitive meaning (nītārtha) sūtras. The first turning of the wheel is interpreted as provisional because the teaching of the true existence of external objects can be explained as provisional by considering its intention, necessity, and the three harms to reality. The second turning of the wheel is interpreted as provisional because the teaching of all phenomena as dreamlike and illusory can also be explained as provisional by considering its intention, necessity, and the three harms to reality. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because it serves as a transitional phase. Firstly, there is a specific intention behind teaching external phenomena as truly existent in the initial teachings, as it caters to the Sarvastivada and Sautrantika schools within our own tradition, as well as ordinary individuals like children, who perceive various sensory experiences of external phenomena. The necessity of teaching in this way is to guide practitioners of the Lesser Vehicle within our own tradition towards the Greater Vehicle. There are factors that contradict substantial existence, as the reasoning of singularity and plurality refutes the true establishment of external phenomena. Secondly, there is an intention behind teaching all phenomena as devoid of true existence in the intermediate teachings, as it refers to the three types of non-existence: the imputed nature being devoid of its own characteristic essence, the dependent nature being devoid of its own essence of arising, and the thoroughly established nature being devoid of its ultimate essence. As it is said in the Thirty Verses: 'The nature is of three kinds, the non-nature is also of three kinds. Considering this, all phenomena are taught as being without nature.' Now, explaining the tenets of the Mind-Only school in detail, first is the explanation of the basis. Fourthly, explaining the tenets of the Mind-Only school in detail, there are three aspects: the establishment of the basis, the establishment of the path, and the establishment of the result. Firstly, the establishment of the basis: 'The five dharmas and the three natures, the eight consciousnesses and the two truths, all of the Great Vehicle are exhausted within this.' As it is said, there are five aspects to explain: the establishment of the five dharmas, the establishment of the three natures, the establishment of the two truths, the establishment of the two selflessnesses, and the establishment of the eight aggregates of consciousness. Firstly, the five dharmas are: cause, name, concept, suchness, and correct wisdom. The example of the first is a vase. The second is the sound of saying 'vase'. The third is the unreal conceptualization included in the three realms. The fourth is the nature of phenomena. The fifth is the non-dual wisdom that takes suchness as its object. If the first three are summarized, they are included in the dependent nature, because any of the three—cause, name, and concept—must be dependent. As it is said in the Discrimination of the Middle and Extremes: 'Cause and concept, and name are all included in three.' Among these five dharmas, suchness and correct wisdom belong to the thoroughly established nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
