Because there might be errors, it is said 'not a reason.' Etc. To this, someone might say, 'There is no flaw, because if the characteristic of a reason with relevance does not exist in the dharma, then the non-existence-implies-non-existence relationship will not be established.' If a reason with relevance is a dharma, then you do not need to acknowledge relevance, because if your characteristic does not exist in the dharma, then the non-existence-implies-non-existence relationship will not be established. Because the non-existence-implies-non-existence relationship itself is part of the proof for understanding what is to be proven. Determining the relationship of the characteristic-dharma depends on establishing the non-existence-implies-non-existence relationship between the two characteristic-dharmas, and the non-existence of the characteristic-dharma relationship is part of the proof.' To illustrate this, someone says, 'Even if there is a relationship, it is a proof for understanding. Without certainty, there is no non-existence-implies-non-existence. Without certainty, it is not a proof.' This is what happened. Second, explaining in detail the special aspects to be listened to. Divided into: brief explanation, detailed explanation, and summarizing the points. First, explaining: In the case of these nine reasons with pervasive-property, it is necessary to mention 'audible' as an example to prove that sound is permanent, because it is to refute the argument that there exists a single reverse reason. So, if it is said like that, how should it be refuted? Explaining this: On what object is the debate? Who is debating? How is the debate? And how to answer the debate? Divided into four parts. First, explaining: In the case of 'the aspect of the reason' etc., the debate is about showing that a single reverse reason does not exist. Second, some Vaibhashikas debate. Third, someone might say, 'There exists a single reverse reason, because the single concomitant reason that proves a sentient being is a living body is correct, because the reverse pervasion about it is established, while the forward pervasion about it is not established.' First, it is established, because a sentient being returns from all contradictories of proving a sentient being is a living body. Second, the forward pervasion about it is not established, because the example of the same class in which both the characteristic and the dharma exist about it does not completely exist. It does not exist, because a sentient being only exists on a living body, and does not exist on other non-living bodies. Fourth, refuting the debate.

Explaining the way of establishing (འདེབས་): The venerable Dharmakirti (དཔལ་ལྡན་ཆོས་ཀྱི་གྲགས་པ, Dignāga) said, 'A sentient being (སྲོག་ལྡན་, sentient being) as the subject (ཆོས་ཅན, subject), your reason (རྟགས་, reason) can establish as having a living body (གསོན་ལུས་བདག་བཅས་, having a living body), if there is no relationship of 'without which, it does not arise' (མེད་ན་མི་འབྱུང་, without which, it does not arise) between the reason and the subject, then it cannot be established.' Because your reason can establish as having a living body, the reverse entailment (ལྡོག་ཚུལ་ངེས་པ་, reverse entailment) is inevitable. The pervasion (ཁྱབ་པ་, pervasion) exists, because the reverse entailment also exists in the absence of the 'without which, it does not arise' relationship between the reason and the subject. To illustrate this, there are three verses: 'The reverse itself is certain, it is called 'without which, it does not arise'. It also does not exist in the absence of a relationship.' Furthermore, a sentient being as the subject, your reason can establish as having a living body, so the way of forward entailment (རྗེས་འགྲོའི་ཚུལ་, forward entailment) is established. Because your reason can establish the way of reverse concomitance (ལྡོག་འགྲོའི་ཚུལ་, reverse concomitance) regarding it. The pervasion exists, if the way of reverse concomitance regarding it is established, then the relationship of 'without which, it does not arise' must be established between the reason and the subject. If the way of pervasion regarding it is established, then the way of forward entailment regarding it must be established. To illustrate this, the phrase 'because it is the abiding of forward entailment' (དེ་ཉིད་ཕྱིར་ན་རྗེས་འགྲོ་གནས།) appears. Furthermore, an audible thing (མཉན་བྱ་, audible) as the subject, your reason cannot establish that sound is permanent (རྟག་པ་, permanent), and the way of forward entailment is also not established, because your reason cannot establish that sound is permanent, and there is no 'without which, it does not arise' relationship between the reason and the subject. To illustrate this, the phrase 'Therefore, the particular case is, there is no reverse, and forward entailment also does not exist' (དེ་ཡི་ཕྱིར་ན་ཁྱད་པར་ནི། །ལྡོག་མེད་རྗེས་འགྲོའང་ཡོད་མ་ཡིན།) appears. For the above situation, the pervasion exists, if between the reason and the subject of a single formulation (སྦྱོར་བ་སྐོར་གཅིག་, single formulation), the relationship of self (རང་གི་བདག་, own nature) i.e., the same (བདག་གཅིག་, one self), or the relationship of cause (རྒྱུ་, cause) and effect (འབྲས་, effect) i.e., arising from that (དེ་བྱུང་, arising from that), is established, then the way of pervasion of a single formulation will be established. If it is not established, then the way of pervasion of a single formulation will not be established. To elaborate on this, the phrase 'If self or cause exists, then the reverse will be established' (རང་གི་བདག་གམ་རྒྱུ་དངོས་ནི། །གྲུབ་ན་ལྡོག་པར་གྲུབ་འགྱུར་བ།) appears. To this, someone says, an audible thing as the subject, your reason can establish that sound is permanent, so it is a valid (ཡང་དག་, valid) reason. Because your reason can establish the way of reverse concomitance of sound being permanent. Just as Dignāga (ཕྱོགས་ཀྱི་གླང་པོ, Dignāga) said: 'The second way and the individual way, are not the reason of the meaning, but are realized through the meaning.' Therefore, you are said to be the reasoning (གཏན་ཚིགས, reasoning) that establishes its unique way of reverse entailment.
