For example, if sound does not exist in the air, then it is considered an invalid reason for proving the non-existence of sound. Another example is when leaves curl up and sleep at night, although this is established on the 'dharmin' (Tibetan: ཆོས་ཅན, Sanskrit: dharmin, Romanized Sanskrit: dharmin, literal meaning: something that possesses a certain quality) of trees, it is not established on some parts of the trees, therefore it is considered an invalid reason for proving that trees are sentient beings. The scripture says: 'For things that exist, it is correct; for things that do not exist, neither is established.' Therefore, there are four types of invalid reasons: those that are completely unestablished on the 'dharmin', and those that are unestablished on a part of the 'dharmin', these two are invalid reasons with defects of meaning; even if established, the debater will doubt whether it is established, these two are invalid reasons with defects of cognition. There are a total of four types of invalid reasons. The scripture says: 'Two doubts, four unestablished, the unestablished statement is also the same.' Second, regarding the classification of 'sapakṣa' (Tibetan: ཕྱོགས་ཆོས་ཅན, Sanskrit: pakṣa, Romanized Sanskrit: pakṣa, literal meaning: aspect, part, sect), there are two types: one is the definite classification without cognitive errors, and the other is the doubtful classification with cognitive errors. In the first classification, the way of establishing universality is usually divided into nine types. The 'hetu' (Tibetan: རྟགས, Sanskrit: hetu, Romanized Sanskrit: hetu, literal meaning: cause, reason, sign) is divided into four categories, and arranged in order in a nine-square grid. The two 'pakṣas' (Tibetan: ཕྱོགས, Sanskrit: pakṣa, Romanized Sanskrit: pakṣa, literal meaning: aspect, part, sect) rotate left and right, and are determined on two examples. There are five in total. First is the general classification, then the separate classification. The first is: here, the 'hetu' of 'sapakṣa' mentioned here has nine types, based on being a pervader in the 'sapakṣa' (Tibetan: མཐུན་ཕྱོགས, Sanskrit: sapakṣa, Romanized Sanskrit: sapakṣa, literal meaning: similar aspect) at that time, including the three types of being a pervader, completely non-existent, and both existing in the 'sapakṣa' at that time; based on being completely non-existent in the 'sapakṣa' at that time, including the three types of being a pervader, completely non-existent, and both existing in the 'vipakṣa' (Tibetan: མི་མཐུན་ཕྱོགས, Sanskrit: vipakṣa, Romanized Sanskrit: vipakṣa, literal meaning: dissimilar aspect) at that time; based on both existing in the 'sapakṣa' at that time, including the three types of being a pervader, completely non-existent, and both existing in the 'vipakṣa' at that time. There are nine types in total. The scripture says: 'Each of the three has three forms.' Second is the separate explanation, divided into the way of existence in the 'sapakṣa' and the way of existence in the 'vipakṣa'. The first has five types: the way of existence in the 'sapakṣa', arranged in order in a nine-square grid, dividing the 'hetu' into four categories, rotating to the right in the usual way, and determining on the 'sadrstantam' (Tibetan: མཐུན་དཔེ, Sanskrit: sadrstantam, Romanized Sanskrit: sadrstantam, literal meaning: similar example). Although the description of the 'hetu' in the scripture comes first, the order is slightly adjusted here for ease of understanding. The first of these five is: here, the 'hetu' of 'sapakṣa' is divided into nine types through the way of existence in the 'sapakṣa', including being a pervader in the 'sapakṣa' at that time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To explain that 'utter non-existence', 'duality' are divided into three categories, and each of these three categories has three 'pervasives', three 'utter non-existences', and three 'dualities', making a total of nine, is an invalid assertion. Just as 'similar instances' also have 'existence', 'non-existence', and 'both', it can be concluded that 'similar instances' also have three cases. In this context, 'existence' and 'both' are correct, while 'non-existence' is an illusion. This is also the meaning, because in that situation, similar instances can correctly use 'pervasive' and 'duality' as reasons, but cannot use 'utter non-existence' as a reason. Second, regarding how to arrange in a table: When explaining how these nine 'reasons' of 'subject-property' apply to 'similar instances', the arrangement of the table is in a clockwise direction. 'Selflessness', 'produced', and 'impermanence' are arranged from right to left in the top three rows. 'Produced', 'audible', and 'arising from effort' are arranged from right to left in the middle three rows. 'Impermanence', 'arising from effort', and 'indicative' are arranged from right to left in the bottom three rows. Similarly, the nine 'propositions' are also arranged in this way. 'Permanent', 'impermanent', and 'arising from effort' are arranged from right to left in the top three rows. 'Permanent', 'permanent', and 'permanent' are arranged from right to left in the middle three rows. 'Not arising from effort', 'impermanent', and 'permanent' are arranged in the bottom three rows from right to left. 'Selflessness, produced, impermanence, produced, audible, arising from effort, impermanence, arising from effort, indicative' are about 'reasons' and so on. 'Permanent, impermanent, arising from effort, permanent, permanent, permanent, not arising from effort, impermanent, permanent'. After arranging in this way, for proving 'sound is permanent', use 'selflessness'; for proving 'sound is impermanent', use 'produced'; for proving 'sound arises from effort', use 'impermanence', these three are arranged in the top three rows. For proving 'sound is permanent', use 'produced'; for the opponent, use 'audible' as the uncommon reason for proving 'sound is permanent'; for proving 'conch sound is permanent', use 'arising from effort', these three are arranged from right to left in the middle three rows. For proving 'sound does not arise from effort', use 'impermanence'; for proving 'conch sound is impermanent', use 'produced'; for proving 'sound is permanent', use 'indicative', these three are arranged from right to left in the bottom three rows. This is because they must be arranged in a clockwise direction, and the 'similar instances' rotate clockwise, and when rotating clockwise, the top and bottom are both correct. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
