Ru Zhu Jiacuo's Teachings LG13: Explanation of the Wheel of Reasoning 2-1 ༄༅། །Explanation of the Wheel of Reasoning. ༄། །Explaining this text properly. Explanation of the Wheel of Reasoning - Rays of the Sun of Good Explanation' possesses unique characteristics unlike other treatises. I prostrate to Mañjuśrī (འཇམ་པའི་དཔལ།, Mañjuśrī, embodiment of wisdom), who skillfully subdues the arrogance of scholars and the conceited drinkers of the two, and is adept at protecting virtuous beings! Having said this, in 'Explanation of the Wheel of Reasoning - Clarifying the Three Treatises,' the explainer is the 'Commentary on Valid Cognition,' and the subject to be explained is the 'Compendium on Valid Cognition.' Now, combining the third clarifying treatise with the smaller treatise for explanation, there are two parts: explaining this text properly, and refuting the evil misconceptions of others. The first part has three aspects: initially, the auspiciousness of the beginning, explaining the title, meaning, and offering homage; in the middle, the auspiciousness of the middle, explaining the content to be composed and the meaning of the text; and finally, the auspiciousness of the end, explaining the activities of the conclusion. The first part has two aspects: the title and the translation. First, the title: For the title of this treatise, there are two Sanskrit versions: The Tibetan translation is གཏན་ཚིགས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་གཏན་ལ་དབབ་པ། (tentsig kyi khorlo tentala babpa), which means 'Establishing the Wheel of Reasoning.' Because ཧེ་ཏུ་ (hetu, cause) means 'reasoning,' ཙཀྲ་ (cakra, wheel) means 'wheel,' and ཧ་སརྦ་ (hasarba) means 'to establish.' Therefore, the Sanskrit is ཧེ་ཏུ་ཙཀྲ་ཧ་སརྦ། (hetucakrahasarba), and the Tibetan is གཏན་ཚིགས་ཀྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་གཏན་ལ་དབབ་པ། (tentsig kyi khorlo tentala babpa). Second, the reason why this treatise is named 'Establishing the Wheel of Reasoning' is that the nine reasons that are the subject matter are arranged in nine tables, rotating clockwise for similar instances and counterclockwise for dissimilar instances, establishing them through the poetic embellishment of the Samantabhadra wheel. Therefore, it is a pure treatise. Furthermore, it is also called the 'Wheel of Three Aspects,' because the nine reasons are summarized into three aspects: the aspect related to the subject of knowledge, the aspect related to similar instances, and the aspect related to dissimilar instances. The latter two aspects are further divided into the aspect of being pervasive, the aspect of being constantly absent, and the aspect of being both. These three aspects are divided into nine in each of the two categories, arranged in tables, and demonstrate the manner of rotating clockwise and counterclockwise. Second is the homage of translation: The translator, at the beginning of translating this treatise, paid homage to the noble Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta (འཕགས་པ་འཇམ་དཔལ་གཞོན་ནུར་གྱུར་པ་, 'phags pa 'jam dpal gzhon nur gyur pa, Noble Youthful Mañjuśrī), which is necessary. Because it pacifies the adverse conditions and obstacles of translating the treatise and increases the favorable conditions and merit. 2-2 Because it pacifies the adverse conditions and obstacles of translating the treatise and increases the favorable conditions and merit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explaining that 'it is for the sake of liberation', I prostrate to the youthful Manjushri. Second, the virtue in between, explains the offering of praise and the commitment to compose. 2-3 The way to enter the actual content of the work to be composed. First, the logician Dignāga, at the beginning of composing this treatise, prostrates to the all-knowing Shakyamuni Buddha, who destroys the net of delusion and confusion to be abandoned, and realizes all knowable things as they are and as many as they are. This is necessary because it is to pacify the obstacles to composing the treatise and to make oneself consistent with the conduct of the holy ones. Explaining it thus: 'To the one who destroys the net of delusion, I prostrate to the all-knowing one.' This is the commitment. Dignāga enters into the sacred work after prostrating to the all-knowing one, because it is for the sake of composing this treatise called 'The Wheel of Three Aspects of Reason'. Then, what is the reason for calling this treatise 'The Wheel of Three Aspects'? There is a reason for this, because the nine instances of the probandum, which are pervasive in the similar class, are established on the subject matter that one wants to know, thus possessing the first aspect; among the nine ways of application, only existing in the similar class or existing in both ways, thus possessing the second aspect; and completely not existing in the dissimilar class, thus possessing the aspect of negation; in this way, these three aspects revolve in a clockwise or counterclockwise manner, so this treatise is called 'The Wheel of Three Aspects'. 2-4 Therefore, the determination of the three aspects of reason will be explained.' This is a different way of explaining 'The Wheel of Three Aspects' from the previous one, I understand. Second, regarding the actual content of the treatise, it generally explains the classification of reasons, and specifically explains the classification of the probandum. First, in general, there are three types of reasons: existing on the subject matter to be inferred at that time, that is, on the subject matter that one wants to know; not existing on all aspects of the subject matter that one wants to know; and existing on some aspects but not on all aspects, both existence and non-existence exist. Therefore, the subject matter to be inferred, both existence and non-existence exist. In this way, the first of the three can be divided into the correct probandum and the apparent probandum, because the author asserts that the property of being made only exists on sound, so from the perspective of certainty, the property of being made is considered as the probandum that proves that sound is impermanent. The latter two are considered as unestablished reasons, such as the object of perception of eye consciousness... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
