After reciting the twenty-one roots and so on, combining them with vastness, the refuge dissolves into light. By dissolving into oneself, the blessings of compassion enter. The mind naturally goes towards Dharma, and one contemplates without obstacles. During the transmission of meditation instructions, repeat the recitation three or seven times together, and understand that this applies to the following as well. Then, at the beginning, all sentient beings, parents equal to the sky, constantly wander in the ocean of suffering of samsara, how pitiful. I alone will establish all of these in the state of complete enlightenment. Because I do not have that ability, I will practice the meditation and recitation of the essence of all Dharmas, the six-syllable mantra, and quickly liberate sentient beings, thinking in this way, possessing the Bodhicitta like hearing or a shepherd. Please speak these words: May all sentient beings attain the state of perfect and complete enlightenment. For that purpose, I will practice the meditation and recitation of the noble Avalokiteśvara. Recite this counting the number, and definitely infuse the good intention into your mindstream. By taking refuge first, it becomes the basis of all vows, the mind goes towards Dharma, and there are no obstacles to practicing the path. By generating Bodhicitta, from then on, whatever thoughts and actions are done become aids to enlightenment, therefore there is a need to go on the path of Dharma. Then, with the mindfulness of turning inward, there are three ways to encourage the mind towards Dharma: laying the foundation of renunciation, urging diligence, and connecting with the Bodhicitta like a shepherd. The first point is divided into two types of examination, common and specific. In general, from beginningless time, grasping onto selflessness as self, this is the root ignorance. Examining the various appearances of the six realms of beings generated by causes, conditions, karma, and afflictions, like enemies and friends in a dream or an illusory kingdom, from their own side, there is not even a tiny particle that is truly established, but grasping onto untrue appearances as true, pervaded by the habitual tendencies of afflictions, this is the suffering of conditioning. Appearing as happiness, but quickly impermanent and changing, this is the suffering of change. Directly experiencing the result of bad karma, this is the suffering of suffering. For example, just as sesame seeds are pervaded by oil, the three realms and six realms.

Sentient beings are not free from the three great sufferings. Thinking that there is not even a hair's breadth of happiness in this cycle of existence, generate a strong renunciation. In particular, examine each of the six realms individually. As it is said in the Sutra on the Mindfulness of the Present, "Sentient beings in hell are tormented by the fires of hell, hungry ghosts are tormented by hunger and thirst, animals are tormented by eating each other, gods are tormented by carelessness, demigods are tormented by fighting and strife, humans are tormented by short lives, there is never any happiness in samsara, not even the tip of a needle." As it is said, from the peak of existence to the Avici hell, wherever one is born in the higher or lower realms of samsara, it is only the nature of suffering. Just as food mixed with poison, whether it looks good or bad, is to be abandoned without distinction, so too, generate a firm mind of renunciation from samsara. Secondly, consider our own human condition in particular. Because we are not born in the eight states of unfreedom, we have the eight freedoms. The five personal endowments and the five circumstantial endowments, that is, the human body endowed with the eighteen freedoms and endowments. This human body is very difficult to obtain, and once obtained, it is of great benefit, like a wish-fulfilling jewel and the Dharma. It is difficult to obtain in terms of cause, example, and number. The number of beings in the lower realms is like the dust of the great earth, and the number of those who can become human is like the dust on a fingernail. A human body with the conditions for practicing the Dharma is as rare as a star in the daytime. As it is said in the White Lotus of Compassion, "It is difficult to be born as a human, it is difficult to have the perfect leisure and endowment, it is difficult for a Buddha to appear in the world, it is difficult to desire virtue, and it is difficult to have a pure aspiration." And so on, endlessly. Even if we obtain such a human body, we are not free from the four great rivers of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and there is not a moment of permanence or happiness. In general, all conditioned phenomena are subject to the four extremes of impermanence: the end of gathering is separation, the end of accumulation is exhaustion, the end of rising is falling, and the end of birth is certain death. In particular, it is uncertain when the human body will die, and it is uncertain by what cause of death it will die. Like a prisoner being led to the execution ground, with each passing day, we draw closer to death. Like a bubble of water, a waterfall on a steep cliff, lightning in the sky, it is very sudden.
