Is it formed into some shape? Is it one? Or is it many? Examine it in this way. Is thought something different from mind? Or is thought mind? Examine it in this way. Furthermore, does mind arise from external appearances? Or do external appearances arise from mind? Examine and analyze this equally. Again, examine and analyze the mind with the mind that examines. Is that mind itself existent? Or is it nonexistent? Is it clear? Or is it unclear? Is it blissful? Or is it painful? Is it permanent? Or is it impermanent? Is it apparent? Or is it unapparent? Is it conscious? Or is it unconscious? Is it self-existent? Or is it selfless? Examine and analyze in this way. At that time, the essence of mind is free from arising, abiding, and ceasing. Its essence is emptiness, like the sky. Its nature is naturally luminous. Awareness is unceasing, appearing in every way, and all these appearances are equal in being unborn. They are equal in being without abiding and without ceasing. Through examination and analysis, one sees the meaning of clarity, awareness, appearance, and emptiness as inseparable, beyond intellect, like the sky. Recognizing that "this is the very truth," all the qualities of the ground, path, and fruition are complete upon the realization of the nature of mind. Second, the superior seeing of the path,

Remaining in the unadulterated state where clarity, awareness, and emptiness are inseparable is calm abiding (shamatha). Seeing and knowing its nature is insight (vipashyana). Furthermore, the nature of mind is free from the two extremes, which is the union of calm abiding and insight of the nature of reality. Because the nature of mind is unborn, it is free from the extreme of permanence. Because it is unceasing, it is free from the extreme of annihilation. Because it is not established as color and form, it is free from the extreme of permanence. Because various displays of potential arise, it is free from the extreme of annihilation. Because its nature abides in emptiness, it is free from the extreme of permanence. Because it is aware and clear in various multiplicities, it is free from the extreme of annihilation. Therefore, it transcends the clinging to permanence, annihilation, and characteristics. The way to practice the union of clarity, awareness, and emptiness, which are inseparable, is: when the mind itself gazes intently at itself, it is free from all grasping and apprehended, and remaining in the state of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality is calm abiding. Seeing that its nature is naturally pure is insight. Resting the mind in devotion to the lama is calm abiding. Seeing its nature as emptiness beyond the intellect is insight. Resting the mind on the generation stage as being like a reflection of the moon in water is calm abiding. Seeing the nature of emptiness as being free from the three states of arising, abiding, and ceasing is insight. Resting the mind on the object of love and compassion that pervades all sentient beings is calm abiding. Seeing its nature as emptiness is insight. Resting the mind on the accumulation of skillful means and merit as being like an illusion, and seeing that they are without inherent existence and are emptiness, is insight. Resting the mind in great bliss, and seeing that it is without attachment and is emptiness, is insight. Resting the mind on all appearances as being the appearance of the mind, like the moon in water, inseparable from appearance and emptiness. Seeing them as interdependent, unborn, and like the moon in water is insight. Resting the mind on pure awareness that is free from artificiality and corruption, and seeing selflessness, awareness-emptiness, and no object is insight. In short, there is no emptiness other than appearances, which are like the moon in water, reflections in a mirror, and echoes. There are no appearances other than emptiness. Therefore, having realized that appearance and emptiness are unborn, like a rainbow appearing in the sky, abiding in that state, and seeing the face of one's own mind is insight, which is the union of calm abiding and insight. That is the meaning of the nature of mind abiding primordially as the essence of the indivisibility of the three kayas.
