Obstacles are eliminated by practicing within the state of emptiness and compassion. Generally, illnesses, unpleasant events, bad dreams, and inauspicious omens are not necessarily demonic obstacles. If these circumstances become significant obstacles to Dharma practice, then they are demonic obstacles. If these circumstances encourage Dharma practice and virtuous actions, even rituals can increase merit. If compassion, renunciation, devotion, and so on, gradually increase, it is the blessing of the Three Jewels encouraging Dharma practice. Auspicious dreams, increased enjoyment, kind words, pleasant speech, and temporary happiness are also not necessarily the blessings of the Three Jewels. If Dharma practice does not increase as a result, it is a demonic obstacle. If the virtuous actions of oneself and others increase, it is the blessing of the Three Jewels or the power of the white-side deities. Obstacles of the mind or obstacles of samadhi are: agitation and dullness, continuous thoughts, and strong afflictions that are difficult to cut off. When the mind is dull, one should contemplate the deeds of the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the qualities of the noble ones, the biographies of the previous lamas, and the benefits of the Dharma, thereby generating great joy, arousing energy, and focusing intently on meditation, which will eliminate dullness. In addition, one can shorten the duration of practice sessions, choose a high place, a bright and open space, a cool place to meditate, splash water on the body, and look at the mandala of the moon, among other methods to eliminate dullness. It can also be eliminated through diet and behavior. For agitation, such as remembering pleasures, one should contemplate the suffering of samsara, the impermanence of this life, high and low status, prosperity and decline, and that there is no essence in any phenomenon of samsara, thereby generating strong renunciation. Relaxing awareness, or placing mindfulness on a single object, and slightly restraining the mind can also eliminate agitation. In addition, one can employ methods that are the opposite of those used to eliminate dullness, and it can also be eliminated through diet and behavior. Continuous thoughts can be eliminated by recognizing the arising of thoughts, counting the thoughts, cutting off the thoughts as they arise, and grasping the thoughts with mindfulness. Contemplate the faults of distraction and the benefits of abiding in the mind, and meditate by alternating between tight and loose states, which will eliminate continuous thoughts. Similarly, for each affliction, one should employ the appropriate antidote and rest evenly in the expanse of reality.

The antidotes are: compassion for hatred, impurity for desire, renunciation for attachment and miserliness, etc. As the various antidotes mentioned in the sutras and tantras, practice them as much as possible. Thus, by knowing that afflictions and their objects are like illusions, and by abiding in the Dharmadhatu, afflictions can be eliminated. To eliminate the disturbance of the elements, the physical disorders and their consequences, first examine the diseases and demons. That is, various diseases arise from the sixty-four pulse petals of the navel and the sixteen pulse networks around the genitals (eighty in total). The defects of these pulses cause heaviness in the lower body, discomfort in bowel movements and urination, blockage of pulses and urine or difficulty in diagnosis, mental distraction, weakness or insufficiency, and harm from cold foods. In addition, most simple wind diseases also depend on these pulses. The thirty-two pulses of the throat and the eight pulses of the heart (forty in total) mainly generate bile and heat diseases, causing excessive sweating, vomiting, loss of taste, drowsiness, heaviness of the head, and harm from warm and nourishing foods. The four pulse petals of the crown and the sixteen pulse petals of the fontanelle (twenty in total) generate both hot and cold diseases and phlegm diseases, causing loss of radiance, stomach discomfort, vomiting of sour water, heat after digestion, heaviness of the body, and harm from old and nourishing foods. Furthermore, if there is disease in the liver, the eyes will be blurred and painful; if there is disease in the kidneys, the ears will be deaf and pus will flow; if there is disease in the lungs, the nose will not smell and there will be a lot of mucus; if there is disease in the heart, the tongue will be uncomfortable and rashes will appear; if there is disease in the spleen, the sense of touch will be unclear and there will be internal pain, etc.; if there is disease in the bones, the teeth and nails will lose their luster; if there is disease in the muscles, dirt will accumulate and the body hair will turn upside down; if there is disease in the tendons, there will be stiffness and contraction; if there is disease in the blood, there will be red or yellow urine; if there is disease in the gods and cavities, the hair and body hair will stand on end. The consequences of physical disorders caused by the disturbance of the elements are two kinds of demons, upper and lower: the upper demon causes numbness of the body, confusion of memory, darkness in dreams, etc. The accomplices of this demon are usually household gods, ghosts, etc. The lower demon causes heaviness of body and mind, increase of the three poisons, internal pain and rashes, etc. In dreams, various animals such as snakes and pigs appear. The accomplices of this demon are usually female ghosts and demons.
