It is said to contemplate the sound arising as "uru uru". In this way, maintain the actual session solely with devotion and supplication. At the end of the session, the lama dissolves into light, shimmering and merging inseparably into oneself. In that very state, relax and abide, abandoning all conceptual thoughts of the three times. As it is said, should one possess the three aspirations during the breaks between sessions? Or, in the case of those with superior faculties, the other two aspirations are less important during the breaks between sessions. As it is said from the mouth, "Devotion to the lama is what is truly necessary." For a while, abandon other elaborations and cultivate only devotion. This is the thirteenth contemplation guide. Secondly, how to take whatever appears as unreal onto the path: From contemplating the previous contemplation, somehow, all appearances become unreal and without luster, blurred like a fog. All these present high and low, good and bad, near and far, true and untrue, go away like being swept away by the wind. This is not merely the force of contemplating unreality with the mind, but arises spontaneously from within through the power of devotion. If this happens, then it is said that the experience of illusion-like arises at that time. At that very moment, focus the mind on all appearances of oneself, others, the environment, and beings. Whatever this is, all these appearances are appearing, but they are not true, but like an illusion, like a dream. Generate this thought strongly. Afterwards, look greatly at the very nature of the thought that thinks, "It is like an illusion, it is not true." There is nothing that can be grasped. Relax and abide in that. Do not alter or modify whatever arises. The essence of this practice is to show one additional aspiration of illusion from the previous devotion, the path-taking of the lama. Sometimes, the lama dissolves into light and merges into oneself, and then contemplate the aspiration of illusion. Sometimes, contemplate the aspiration of illusion while the lama is abiding in front or on the crown of the head. Either of these two is appropriate. This is the fourteenth contemplation guide. Even if you practice in this way, if virtuous activity does not arise immediately, it is because you have not reached the limit of great devotion. Your faculties are not superior. Now, the second, the guidance for those with intermediate faculties, without interruption by other words, is: Contemplating one's own body as the empty form of a deity, and the two, how to take whatever appears as the path of illusion. The first is: From taking refuge up to supplicating the lama, it is the same as in the case of those with superior faculties.

Thus practice. Spend half or two-thirds of the session praying to the lama. Then the lama dissolves into light and merges into oneself. Rest slightly in the inseparability of the lama and one's own mind. If a thought suddenly arises there, look closely at your own body and mind. Clearly visualize yourself as the deity's form. Give it an analysis: What is it? This appearance as the deity's form is also just an appearance of one's own mind, and apart from that, there is not even a little bit of anything real outside. This deity's form is just the mind. The mind is just appearing as this deity's form, so strongly training in this thought is the first key point. Furthermore, in the essence of the mind, there is also no true reality, only appearance, and it does not exist anywhere inside, outside, or in between. There is nothing that can be said to be such a thing. Appearance is appearance, reality is not real. Like an illusion, so strongly training in this thought is the second key point. Then, when one looks at the essence of the one who thinks it is like an illusion, that thought also naturally subsides. Without grasping at whatever arises, resting in that state is the third key point. Thus, one must repeatedly meditate on that thought that possesses these three key points. This is the fifteenth practice. The second is to gradually transfer these three key points to all other appearances and train in them. That is, first meditate on the visualization of one's own body as the empty form of the deity, and without that disappearing, first on all of one's own dwelling, possessions, and enjoyments, visualize that they are nothing other than appearances of the mind. And that mind is also like an illusion. Grasping at illusion also dissolves into the dharmadhatu, and one learns to maintain the natural flow of self-arising awareness. Having become accustomed to that, if one has independent food, wealth, retinue, land, etc., and objects of attachment and aversion, enemies and friends, one must definitely train in them. Having become accustomed to that, gradually combine all appearances with these three key points. In all the breaks between sessions, meditate on the thought of death and impermanence, and devotion to the lama, and visualize all appearances as unreal and like illusions. Do not be separated from any one of these three. This is called combining the three thoughts. Thus, this is the sixteenth practice. Third, in the last session, to generate samadhi on one seat, one needs to be free from the four awakenings. The four are: too much walking and sitting is the awakening of virtuous activity, too much moving and changing is.
