Focusing (on a physical support). Sometimes, focus on a physical object such as a statue, a piece of wood, or a small stone, hold awareness, and remain without being interrupted by other thoughts. If that becomes stable, the second is to meditate by relying on sound: focus on whatever is clear, such as the sound of water, the sound of wind, or the sound of animals. Once that is stable, the third is to hold awareness and meditate on whatever arises in the field of the nose, whether it is a good or bad smell. Similarly, the fourth is to focus on and meditate on whatever taste appears to the tongue, whether it is delicious, spicy, or not delicious. In this way, the fifth is to hold awareness on whatever is clear in the body's tactile sensation, whether it is comfortable or uncomfortable. Once you have grasped these a little, the sixth is to meditate by relying on the phenomena that appear in the field of the mind, which are also of two types: conditioned phenomena and unconditioned phenomena. The first is the phenomena of samsara, the thoughts to be abandoned, such as desire, anger, pride, the five types of views, and doubt, etc. Even if the mind is distracted by thoughts of afflictions and near afflictions, focus awareness single-pointedly on whatever aspect is clearly manifest in the field of thought and meditate. Furthermore, focus on whatever arises in the mind of virtue, which is the antidote thought, without being interrupted by other thoughts, and by holding awareness single-pointedly, the experience of abiding arises. Second session.

Because it is said in the scriptures, first, to hold the mind, focus the mind on a single object, such as form. By gathering the six consciousnesses into one, the mind does not cling to other objects, thus calming the mind. Therefore, associate with the unconditioned Dharma, do not cling to the support of the six objects of perception, but let it appear naturally, view it as emptiness, do not cling to what is to be abandoned and the remedies, do not make any discriminations, gaze with both eyes at the space in front, the body does not move, the breath is natural, remain calm. Do not speak. The glorious Tilopa said: The mind should be held like the sky. Saraha also said: In the three periods of the night, like the sky, the breath is evenly bound, completely knowing equality, merge into it. The arrow-maker said, when can one be powerful, quickly abandon impermanent shaking. It is said in the scriptures. From the Prajnaparamita Sutra it is also said: To practice yoga with Prajnaparamita is to practice yoga with space. Its meaning should be understood. By practicing in this way, a good state of meditation can arise, and the causes of perfect Shamatha and Vipassana can be accomplished. The detailed branches of these can be referred to the nine stages of abiding mind and the eleven ways of attending that I have taught. The cause of Shamatha is to rely on discipline, its nature is to be free from afflictions and discriminations. The condition is that it arises on a special abiding mind, the benefit is to suppress coarse afflictions and suffering. The above is the order of abiding the non-abiding mind. Next, to introduce Vipassana, the glorious Tilopa said: How wonderful! This is self-aware wisdom, beyond the path of speech, not the realm of consciousness. Tilopa, I have nothing to teach, know yourself! The meaning of what the venerable one said is, first, hold the mind, abide in a clear and non-discriminating state, and then observe the arising of the six consciousnesses. Observe whether these thoughts arise from the external objects of appearance, sound, smell, taste, touch, and Dharma, or from the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body? If you observe in this way, you will find that thoughts do not arise from these. The six objects and the senses
