Whether (sentient beings) are born in high or low places, they are like a pit of fire and an unclean abyss. Having realized the truth of suffering and its cause—the truth of the origin of suffering—with the determination to definitely liberate from all samsara, one relies properly on the acceptance and rejection of actions and paths that are in accordance with liberation, thereby realizing the temporary cessation of suffering, which is the path of the middling person. Not abiding in either existence or peace, one cultivates and practices the four objects of generosity and the six perfections, etc., which are gathered by compassion and wisdom, traversing the five paths and ten bhumis, and attaining the non-abiding nirvana, which is the path of the superior person. These also require the former to be the foundation for generating the intention of the latter. Therefore, here too, it is essential to cultivate with certainty in the continuum through hearing and experience. Second, the pith instruction school summarizes the four thoughts that turn the mind as the common preliminary practices and expounds them. That is, contemplating the difficulty of finding leisure and endowments and the impermanence of death, and only thinking about the gross results, is the same in meaning as the path of the inferior person. On top of that, thinking about the subtle results of actions and the faults of samsara is the same in meaning as the path of the middling person. On top of these, adding the superior intention—the mind of enlightenment—is the path of the great person. First, if one does not generate renunciation towards all existence in the three realms, one does not have the vessel for cultivating a qualified path, therefore, all the stages of the three types of individuals are summarized into the four thoughts that turn the mind, and it is crucial to cultivate until one generates the unfeigned intention to completely liberate oneself and all other beings from samsara. The detailed cultivation methods for these appear in other guidance manuals, and one should strive to cultivate them as much as possible. Second, there are five uncommon preliminary practices, namely, the root of the path, the completion of favorable conditions, the removal of unfavorable conditions, the entering of blessings, and the uncommon yoga. Among these, first, there are two roots of the path, namely, the root of all vehicles—refuge, and the uncommon root of the Mahayana—generating the mind of enlightenment. The detailed guidance for these will not be discussed here. If we summarize the essential points of cultivation, first, there are three aspects of refuge, namely, the object, sentient beings, and the manner of taking refuge. That is, on a comfortable seat, the essential points of the body are aligned.

The visualization of the refuge field is as follows: In the center of the immeasurable palace of pure realms, a wish-fulfilling tree that showers down all desires, its trunk with branches, leaves, and flowers in full bloom, in the very heart of its center, on a lion throne, lotus, and moon cushion, dwells the teacher, the Bhagavan, inseparable from the root guru, possessing the form of an emanation body. In the spaces between the surrounding trees, visualize the assembly of the Three Jewels, Three Roots, and Wisdom Protectors, like a dense cloud. Who takes refuge? In front of these objects of refuge, primarily parents, enemies, and harm-doers of this life, dwell all sentient beings pervading space, without exception, with oneself as the guide. How does one take refuge? With respectful body, prostrate; with respectful speech, recite the refuge formula; with respectful mind, with unwavering faith, take refuge from now until enlightenment, with the intention of a great being as the forerunner. Recite the refuge vows, whether extensive, intermediate, or concise. If summarizing, recite, "I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha; in this way, I accumulate merit to the best of my ability." Second, there are also three aspects to generating bodhicitta: placing sentient beings pervading space as the object of focus in the mind, with oneself as the object of focus, generate bodhicitta possessing the nature of aspiration and action, that is: In order to liberate all sentient beings, equal to space, from the ocean of suffering of samsara, and quickly attain the state of unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, for that purpose, I shall practice the profound path. With such intention, recite other extensive words, or recite generosity and so forth, and finally, settle the mind on the four brahmaviharas, and meditate on the four immeasurables, wishing all sentient beings to have happiness and so forth. Finally, rays of light radiate from the objects of refuge, purifying the sins and downfalls of oneself and others, increasing lifespan, merit, wealth, and realization. Visualize the retinue dissolving into light, dissolving into the main deity, the main deity dissolving into light, dissolving into oneself, receiving the blessings of the guru and the Three Jewels, and visualize all sentient beings going to pure lands, and abide in equipoise. Second, the mandala, which accomplishes the perfect accumulation of conducive conditions, is: If the refuge field was previously condensed, then clearly manifest the field of merit again, or if it was previously brief, then do not condense the refuge field, but make it the field of merit, in front of it
