Regarding attachment, when one sees attachment arising towards one's own mind-stream or certain objects, this is the affliction of attachment. If it is not abandoned, not tamed, and not subdued, it will generate immeasurable suffering such as that of the lower realms. If it is tamed and subdued, it will become the cause for perfect Buddhahood. One should think, "I should subdue this and make it the cause for perfect Buddhahood." Then, take the affliction of attachment, which is one's own enemy, into one's own mind-stream. Then, like cultivating loving-kindness, expand its scope more and more. Finally, take all the attachment of all sentient beings, including their latent tendencies, onto oneself, and thereby think that one's own attachment has become very great due to the mind's capacity to embrace it. Think that all sentient beings are free from attachment and attain perfect Buddhahood. This is conventional bodhicitta. One's own attachment, as large as a mountain, is embraced by one's own mind, and the attachment of others is also embraced. The nature of attachment is also mind; apart from mind, there is not even a particle of matter. When mind looks at mind, the past and future minds are ceased and unborn, therefore they do not exist. The present mind is free from any identification with form, etc., and is not established in any nature, therefore it abides like space. The mere name of attachment does not actually exist in reality, so one should settle into that state. This is ultimate bodhicitta. From these two, in sequence, arise the activity of pacifying afflictions merely by hearing the name of the Form Body, and the Dharmakaya, which abandons all afflictive imprints and bad migrations. Similarly, one should know how to apply this to all afflictions such as hatred, etc., it is said. This is a writing of the Guru's words without any addition or omission. May the benefit of the extremely profound instruction of transforming afflictions into the path be as vast as the sky. The Guru Yoga practice. Homage to all the Gurus. In general, the Guru is very important in all the teachings of both the Great and Lesser Vehicles, therefore many ways of relying on the Guru have been taught. The *Gandavyuha Sutra* says: "Without one who takes birth, one cannot cross to the other shore by boat. Even if all qualities are perfectly complete, without a Guru, one cannot reach the end of samsara." It is said that worldly qualities, such as noble birth, etc., are complete, or that a practitioner

Although a student may have complete qualities such as faith and diligence, realization will not arise without relying on a lineage-blessed lama. If realization does not arise, one cannot be liberated from samsara, so one must rely on a qualified lama. The qualities of a lama are: A lama's qualities include having a lineage. If there is realization, then one is qualified. Thus, one must rely on a lineage that is unbroken from the perfect Buddha and has a firm conviction in bodhicitta, such as the Kadampa lineage of Jowo. There are two ways to rely on such a lama. First, to rely in terms of meaning is to practice with body, speech, and mind according to the lama's instructions. Second, to rely in terms of secret symbols is to visualize the lama in one's heart or on the crown of one's head, and to pray with devotion. This has three parts: preliminary, main part, and conclusion. The preliminary has two parts: First, generate bodhicitta, cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta. Second, contemplate emptiness, visualizing one's own body as appearing but without inherent existence, like a reflection in a mirror. Visualize the heart as a ball of light. The main part is to visualize the lama of one's choice on a lotus and moon seat on the crown of one's head. Depending on whether one has seen the lama before or not, visualize the size or color of the lama's body. Remember the lama's face, posture, voice, and thoughts. Visualize all the lineage lamas up to the Buddha, as well as all lamas with whom one has a Dharma connection, yidams, Buddhas, and bodhisattvas, as being inseparable from the lama. Offer whatever offerings are available. Then, join the palms and take refuge in the lama's body, speech, and mind as much as possible. The meaning of this is to think that the lama is free from all faults, completely perfect in all qualities, without inherent existence in ultimate truth like the sky, but appears for the benefit of all sentient beings. Then, pray that the bodhicitta, which is the essence of the meaning of the definitive sutras, how it arises in the lineage of the lamas, virtuous friends, rinpoches, and lineage lamas, and how it is present in the lineage of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, may be blessed to arise in my five aggregates right now. Prosperity, decline, high, low.
