Oh! In terms of classification, there are five powers: the power of virtuous friends, the power of awakened causes, the power of increasing virtuous roots as a result, the power of hearing the Mahayana teachings, and the power generated by repeatedly familiarizing oneself with what has been heard. The first is the unstable bodhicitta that depends on friends, and the latter four are the stable bodhicitta that is difficult to be diminished by adverse factors. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The power of friends, the power of causes, the power of the root, the power of hearing, the power of good habits, unstable and stable arise, it is said that bodhicitta is shown by others." As it is said, the conventional bodhicitta, which mainly arises from the power of others, also includes the rituals for obtaining what has not been obtained, the methods for protecting what has been obtained from being lost, and the restoration after it has been lost. Here, it is time to perform the rituals of generating bodhicitta and vows, which is the first step of obtaining what has not been obtained. Moreover, regarding this, according to the sayings of previous scholars, there are two types of bodhicitta: the Madhyamaka school and the Cittamatra school. The Madhyamaka school follows the sutras such as the Avatamsaka Sutra and the Akasagarbha Sutra, spoken by the noble Manjushri, transmitted from the great scholar Nagarjuna, and is the tradition of the great scholar Shantideva and others, practiced by the great masters of the doctrine, such as the glorious Sakya school. The Cittamatra school follows the sutras such as the Bodhisattvapiṭaka Sutra, spoken by the noble Maitreya, transmitted from the noble Asanga, and is the tradition of the great scholar Chandragomin, the practice of Jowo Rinpoche, and practiced by the virtuous Kadam masters. It is said that these two have many different distinctions in terms of the object to be taken, the person who takes it, the ritual of taking it, the way of protecting it after taking it, and the restoration after it has been lost. Some wise people also say that the distinction and differences between these two are unreasonable. Here, putting aside the order of these debates, as it appears in the writings of the great scholar, the noble Asanga, and Jowo Rinpoche Atisha, the fully enlightened Buddha...

From here on, in order to offer according to the unbroken lineage of our great masters, there are three aspects to the meaning: First, it is necessary to ascertain the basis of bodhicitta and vows; second, to accomplish the application; and finally, to establish the nature. First, there are three aspects to ascertaining the basis: generating revulsion for the end of suffering samsara; rejecting attachment to the end of peaceful nirvana; and generating joy for the mind of enlightenment that is free from both extremes. First, generating revulsion for the end of suffering samsara must be ascertained as follows: Now that we have obtained the leisure and opportunity of a human body, we must strive to attain unsurpassed enlightenment in order to cross the ocean of suffering samsara. The reason is that only this basis can accomplish these two goals, and others cannot. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "Having obtained that which exhausts the ocean of birth, and also plants the seed of supreme enlightenment, which is more excellent in quality than a wish-fulfilling jewel, who, having obtained a human existence, would make it fruitless? The path of the Sugatas, the vessel for leading beings, is obtained by humans with great mental strength. That path is not obtained by gods, nagas, asuras, khading rigdzin, mi'am chi, or those who eat flesh." It is also difficult to obtain leisure and opportunity, as it says in the Heap of Jewels Sutra: "It is difficult to become a human being. It is difficult to obtain a leisure and opportunity that is complete and pure." And the teacher Shantideva said: "Relying on the boat of a human body, one is freed from the great river of suffering. This boat is difficult to find later, so do not sleep in ignorance." Even if it is obtained, it will not last long, as the noble Nagarjuna said: "This life is full of harm, like a bubble in the wind, how much more unstable is it? It is a great wonder that one can wake up from the reversal of breathing in and breathing out." Therefore, one must quickly strive for virtue. If one does not strive for virtue but instead commits evil, one will fall into the lower realms, as Shantideva said: "If one does not do good and accumulates evil, even after hundreds of millions of kalpas, one will not hear the name of a happy realm."
