Second, regarding the instructions on inner contemplation meditation: Visualize that on the crown of your head, in the center of a full moon, the Bhagavan Shakyamuni Buddha is always present. Visualize it clearly again and again, and through mindfulness, ensure that all your actions and choices do not deviate from the Buddha's teachings. Abide with mindfulness and awareness. Then, contemplate that all sentient beings may have immeasurable happiness, and abide with focused mind, etc., practice the four immeasurables. Then, according to the order of inner contemplation meditation, practice the samadhi of visualization, as follows: After understanding the faults of desires and the benefits of meditation, sit on a comfortable cushion, keeping the body motionless. Gather the mind inward without distraction, and first focus on the object of meditation. Then, without allowing thoughts to arise, maintain natural abiding, which is called continuous abiding. Then, practice sequentially: placing, close placing, taming, pacifying, close pacifying, single-pointedness, and equanimity, these nine methods of abiding the mind, through practice combined with the essential instructions, one can obtain single-pointed samadhi free from attachment and aversion to desires, joy and bliss arise from obtaining pliancy of body and mind, and one can discern the signs of whether or not one is tainted by subtle desires.

Accompanied by investigation and analysis, this is the first dhyana. Then, having stabilized that, one cultivates by placing awareness inwardly in its own nature. The clinging to the previous investigation and analysis subsides, and a joy and happiness greater than before arises in body and mind; this is the second dhyana. Then, by meditating on the yoga of non-attachment to joy, the clinging to the joy and happiness of the body subsides, and a samadhi pervaded by unwavering mental bliss arises; this is the third dhyana. Then, by cultivating the yoga of non-attachment to mental happiness, with perfect equanimity and perfect purity of mindfulness, the movement of the winds ceases, the clinging to happiness subsides, and the mind abides in a state of clear lucidity and one-pointedness; this is the fourth dhyana. Thus, the teacher Sangye Sang said: "The four immeasurables and the four dhyanas, each in turn grasping at self, perceiving all forms as self, this is the sequential birth in the Brahma realms." So it is said. Then, having become disillusioned with the conceptualization of the fourth dhyana, one cultivates the four formless absorptions. Therein, these diverse appearances of form are like the sky; thus, by placing the samadhi of non-appearance in one-pointedness, all appearances gradually subside, and one abides in a state of emptiness like the sky; this is the sphere of infinite space. Passing beyond that, by placing the mind unwaveringly in its own nature, that previous conceptualization of grasping at emptiness also subsides, and only awareness, without beginning or end, abides; this is the sphere of infinite consciousness. Then, by cultivating with one-pointedness that the nature of consciousness is also emptiness, insubstantial, and without anything whatsoever, the grasping at consciousness also gradually subsides, and one abides in a state without even the slightest characteristic of form or mind; this is the sphere of nothingness. Passing beyond that, by abandoning the grasping at existence and non-existence of any dharma, and abiding without effort in any mental activity, the grasping at nothingness is also liberated, and one reaches the peak of worldly non-discrimination; this is the absorption of the peak of existence. Thus, from the former it is said: "Without realizing equality and formlessness, not knowing it to be the basis of name, if one abides in the four birth-places, one is born in the realm of the peak of existence." So it is said. Therefore, as it is said: "The first worldly dhyana is four, the four absorptions are nine faults," thus, on top of the eight colored dhyanas, plus one realm of the desire realm.
