Therefore, directly refuting the attachment, but not actually establishing anything, thereby preventing the opponent's wrong conceptions. Among these, cutting off elaboration is only done by the dialecticians, because they contradict the commitment of those who assert elaboration. For example, when the Samkhyas assert that the effect arises from the cause, thus asserting arising from itself, it is refuted by saying: arising from what already exists is meaningless, which is necessarily the case. As stated in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "If it arises from that, what little function is there? It is not reasonable for what has already arisen to arise again." This means that the internal sense bases, such as the eyes, already exist from the beginning, but are not manifest. Existing as the cause, they are merely made manifest by conditions, and this is the effect. To this, the dialectician would say: because it already exists from the beginning, it is necessarily the case that arising is meaningless, thus presenting a dialectic that includes a contradiction. If it is realized that even if the effect exists in the cause, arising is meaningful, and this is not contradictory, then the pervasion is not established. Then, even if it already exists from the beginning when it is not manifest, it must arise even when it is manifest. Just as it does not need to arise, it is pervasive that what already exists from the beginning does not need to arise when it is not manifest. Or, even if the manifest existence does not need to arise, it is not pervasive that the unmanifest existence does not need to arise. If this is distinguished, then the pervasion is the same as what is to be proven, just as we do not accept that the effect exists in the cause, this distinction is also not established. Thus, arising from itself is refuted. Furthermore, Buddhists believe that smoke is different from smoke and arises from fire, thus admitting arising from another, and also believing that another can produce. From darkness, flames do not arise. Based on these two points, it is refuted by saying: if another arises from another, then flames should also arise from darkness. If flames do not arise from darkness, then smoke should not arise from a different fire either, because both are equally different. This dialectic that includes a contradiction, as stated in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "If it is said that relying on another, another arises from another, then thick darkness should also arise from flames." When this is said, if it is realized that the pervasion is not established, then just as flames do not arise from darkness, smoke should not arise from fire; just as smoke arises from a different fire, flames should also arise from darkness, thus making the premises equal, thereby establishing the pervasion. Easy to understand.

If so, then the flame, as the subject, should produce darkness. Because you are different from darkness, and darkness is also different from you. If it is said that the flame, being different from smoke, has the ability to produce smoke, so it produces smoke; the flame, being different from darkness, does not have the ability to produce darkness, so it does not produce. Then, this difference is the same as what is to be proven, just as we have not established production from other. The difference that the flame has the ability to produce smoke, but the flame does not have the ability to produce darkness, is also not established, so it refutes production from other. Similarly, because there are two faults, it refutes production from both. Also, the Lokayata (materialist) asserts that things arise without a cause, and they assert that the fragrance of a lotus in the sky does not arise, because it is imperceptible. For this, the same method is used to refute it. It says: If beings become empty of cause, then the fragrance of a lotus in the sky is just like being imperceptible. Because the world is very bright, people think that the world is produced from a cause, just like their previous thoughts. If one admits that it arises from no cause, then because the world is without cause, all kinds of bright things should be manifestly imperceptible, which is a reductio ad absurdum containing a contradiction. If one realizes that the pervasion is not established, even though the world is without cause, it appears bright, and the fragrance of a lotus in the sky, even though it is without cause, should appear manifestly, thus establishing the pervasion by reconciling. To this, if one says that even though they are the same in being without cause, the world has essence, so it appears, while the fragrance of a lotus in the sky does not have essence, so it does not appear, if one wants this difference. Then, this difference is the same as what is to be proven. Just as we have not established production from no cause, the difference that the world has essence, while the fragrance of a lotus in the sky does not have essence, is also not established, so it refutes production from non-existence. Thus, by reductio ad absurdum, all established tenets are refuted, and one does not accept tenets that originate from oneself. As it says in the *Refutation of Disputes*: If I have some vows, then I will have these faults. Because I have no vows, I am only without fault. And in the *Four Hundred Stanzas* it says: Existence, non-existence, existence and non-existence, for whom
