Therefore, it is said that sentient beings are born in a hell called Avīci. In the One Hundred Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it says that due to the maturation of the karma of abandoning the Dharma, sentient beings are born in the great Avīci hell and experience unbearable suffering. There, when a great fire kalpa occurs, they are born in the eastern world in a place where there is a great Avīci hell for sentient beings. There, when a great fire kalpa occurs, the sutra says that they are born in the ten directions, endlessly and infinitely. Therefore, having entered the gate of Secret Mantra, if the samaya (vow) to the Vajra Master is greatly broken, it will be long and painful. In the Root Tantra of the Tree of Supreme Samaya, it says: Whoever has malice and slanders the Vajra Master, those who have broken their vows, for as long as it takes to empty the great ocean by dripping the water with each strand of hair, for that many kalpas, they will remain in what is known as the Vajra Hell. So it is said. Second, the signs of being born as a preta (hungry ghost) are: at the time of death, the sky is unclear, the yellow light fades, and a twilight-like appearance occurs. The sun and moon die, and yellow clouds obscure the sun and moon. It feels cold after it rains, and it rains that night. These are the outer obscurations of pretas, the inner obscurations, the sudden obscurations, the specific obscurations, the reversed obscurations, the obscurations of karma and the categories of karma, and the obscurations of not being able to control the appearance of enjoyment, and the signs of being born into these obscurations. Third, the signs of being born as an animal are: at the time of death, the sky is hazy and warm, without luster, and thick with dark clouds, or the valley is shrouded in mist and becomes greenish-blue with smoke. If a hazy and unpleasant sky appears, one will be born as animals with many legs, without legs, with four legs, with wings, with claws, and so on. Fourth, the signs of being born as an asura (demigod) are: at the time of death, strong winds blow from all directions, dark brown clouds resembling terrifying creatures appear, the clouds churn violently, thunder roars, and lightning flashes.
