The Twenty-second Chapter: Determining the Categories of Signs of the Three Times. The Twenty-second Chapter: Determining the Categories of Signs of the Three Times. Having extensively shown the stages of practice in this way, now, to show the stages of determining the signs of the practitioner yogi, there are three: Generally showing how the signs of practice in the previous life now reside in body, speech, and mind; Specifically explaining how the signs of entering the path now, along with the appearances of the three doors, arise; Concluding with secrecy the signs of certainty of liberation and confusion in the bardo and future lives. The first has three: First, the signs of how the body practiced the three kayas; the signs of how the speech was accustomed; the signs of how the mind was trained. The first is: Because in the previous life, having practiced the three kayas through the door of the body, it was interrupted, now there are four to show its signs: the order of the signs, the reason for arising, if accustomed, there is fruit, if not accustomed, certainty is not found. The first is: From the glorious Sky Without Demise, the Great Tantra of the Blazing Body says: How the complete Buddhas, the signs of the body and the signs of the speech, likewise the signs of the vajra mind, how they appeared before, here also in the bodies of all sentient beings, these will appear. Whoever these appear to, they are fortunate ones who have practiced before. From those who have not matured before, now is the time to determine the fruit. For the person who accomplishes this, the signs of the body and likewise the speech, the mind, etc., these signs will arise. Thus it says, in the previous life, as a sign of practicing the body of the Buddha, whether born as a man or a woman, in the center of the forehead there is a conch shell spiraling to the right, or upright wrinkles like three peaks, and the marks of Om (藏文:ཨཱོྃ,梵文天城体:ओम्,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:唵), etc., in the form of drawings or self-arising. As a sign of practicing speech, on the right neck of a man and the left of a woman, there are eight-petaled lotuses, or conch shells spiraling to the right, or like silk ribbons, or iron hooks, or swords, and those marked with Ah (藏文:ཨཱཿ,梵文天城体:आः,梵文罗马拟音:āḥ,汉语字面意思:阿), appear in the form of drawings or self-arising. As a sign of practicing the mind, in the heart there are vajras, wheels, the flesh color of three peaks, or the shape of jewels, or the form of letters, along with Hum Second, the arising of those signs.

The fifth reason is: All sentient beings inherently possess body, speech, and mind, which manifest now due to prior habituation. As stated in that very text: "Even butchers and prostitutes, lacking merit, possess the basis of body, speech, and mind. Therefore, if habituated in previous lives, even if there are obstacles in this life, the signs of body, speech, and mind will appear in all of them." Third, the way to attain the result through habituation is: because these signs exist, if one strives in this life, one can quickly be liberated into body, speech, and mind. That is, because there is a sign of body, if one practices body now, one will attain the Vajra body in two lifetimes; by practicing speech, one will accomplish Vajra speech in two lifetimes; and by habituating mind, one will accomplish it in three lifetimes. The definite knowledge of the signs and the result of habituation

This person, through familiarity with the minds of the Buddhas, is blessed. If this one diligently practices meditation, without interruption, in three lifetimes, in the mandala of the Buddhas' minds, there is no doubt of attaining Buddhahood. Thus it is said. Fourth, even if those signs are present, if one does not practice the Dharma, then the habitual tendencies from beginningless time are deep-rooted, temporary non-virtue is likely to arise, and the force of karmic momentum is strong. Therefore, merely having the signs of the past will not protect one in the future. With a small amount of past virtue and the mixed karma of various present actions, one will be born with a body-marked form, and the speech will be superior to that, being born as a Brahma retinue, and the mind-marked one will be born as an Asura. That very sutra says: If there is an obstacle in this, then that fruit will not be obtained; the mind, from mental confusion, will become a place; the body, from that, will become a form realm god; and the speech will become a Brahma abode. Thus it is said. Second, regarding how the three signs of the present arise from how one has become familiar with speech, if, after the signs have arisen, one diligently practices yoga of body, speech, and mind, then liberation can be attained in two lifetimes; otherwise, liberation cannot be attained. The signs and their nature are: That very sutra says: Thus, also, for sentient beings, in the past, to the three bodies of the Buddhas, as a sign of familiarity and training, thus it arises, O Dakini. The body of all the Buddhas, whoever has become familiar with it in the past, the words spoken are powerful, and without cessation or change, this itself changes and is blessed. In a single day, a thousand verses, or the meaning of four hundred verses, appears in the mind. Whatever is spoken is beneficial to others, this is one who has also become familiar with the body in the past, O Dakini. The speech of all the Buddhas in the past, whoever has become familiar with it, the voice is like the sound of Brahma, pleasing to the ears of all beings, and one can remember a thousand verses in the mind in a single day, and all sentient beings are like servants, this one who employs them, in the past has also become familiar with the speech of the Buddhas, O Dakini. The mind of the Buddhas, the person who has become familiar with it in the past, when another speaks a single word, one understands its meaning as it is, and the words that one speaks oneself.
