The great wheel. Taking the cause of accomplishing the body, etc., as the condition, it abides and holds in the middle, and ultimately performs all the actions of destruction. The great elements, with one cause, appear as the lord of doing various things. Therefore, it is skilled in the needs of oneself and others, and in accomplishing the meaning of activities. Thus it is said. Fourth, the characteristics are five: the characteristic of earth is solidity, the characteristic of water is fluidity, the characteristic of fire is warmth, the characteristic of wind is movement, and the characteristic of space is openness and vastness. Fifth, the order of activities: From the Ornament of Clear Realization: The order of the activities of the inner elements is: earth makes the basis of the body, arising and desiring to be the ripening of flesh. Water gathers all the bodies, arising and desiring to be the ripening of blood. Fire ripens all the bodies, arising and desiring to be the ripening of warmth. Wind lifts all the bodies, arising and making the ripening of breath. Thus it is said. Sixth, the nature of phenomena: Generally, it is emptiness, but here the nature of phenomena, which is considered as the nature of phenomena that holds its own characteristics, is: From Self-Arisen: The nature of the five elements is: the cause of arising is earth, the wisdom of arising is fire, the emanation of arising is wind, the lord of arising is water, and the nature of phenomena of arising is space. Thus it is said. Seventh, combining the meanings has two aspects: Combining the meanings of the five elements with the essence is: From the same text: Combining the meanings of the elements is as follows: The nature of the Dharmakaya, primordially pure, is also earth because its essence is unchanging. The wisdom of awareness acts on meaning, so it is also fire. The wisdom of awareness departs into the unmoving realm, so it is also wind. The wisdom of awareness is the union of the three channels, so it is also water. Wisdom merges into the state of emptiness and clarity, non-duality, so it is also space. Thus it is said. Combining the meanings of the five elements individually with the inner consciousness is: From the Ornament of the Jewel Casket: The outer five elements themselves are the common self-continuum phenomena, because all the outer appearing elements are combined with one's own consciousness, so they are common phenomena. The distinctions are as follows: The characteristic of earth is solidity, and it is also combined with the wisdom of consciousness being free from arising and ceasing. The characteristic of wind is lifting, and it is also combined with the wisdom of consciousness being unobstructed. Fire

The characteristic of fire is burning, which should also be combined with the wisdom of awareness not being controlled by afflictions. The characteristic of water is moisture, which should also be combined with the wisdom of awareness pervading all realms. The characteristic of space is vastness, which should also be combined with the characteristic of wisdom being limitless. Eighth, the way the five elements are liberated, as stated in the "Garland of Pearls": Space itself is all-pervading and empty, Space itself is liberated into things. Wind is the appearance without grasping, Liberated into the action of gathering things. Fire is maturing, giving, and consuming, Liberated into moving and separating essence from dross. Earth is generating and supporting, Liberated into emptiness, without things, boundless. Water is gathering and moistening, Liberated into the action of burning and maturing. Thus it is said. Ninth, classification: Each of the five elements, such as earth of earth, etc., are five groups, totaling twenty-five. Again, from the same text: The wind of space is in things, The fire of space is in gathering, The water of space is in burning, The earth of space opens up space, The space of space is appearance. The wind of wind is in stability, The space of wind is vast, The water of wind is swift, The fire of wind is throwing and gathering, The earth of wind is clear image. The water of water is sound image, The space of water is without obstruction, The wind of water flows without attachment, The fire of water is gathering, The earth of water is pervading. The fire of fire is generating, The space of fire burns things, The wind of fire ignites, The water of fire dissipates, The earth of fire holds. The earth of earth pervades walking, The space of earth is great undertaking, The wind of earth fills and empties, The water of earth generates things, The fire of earth dries. Thus it is said. By studying these differences, one can accomplish each special quality, as explained in its commentary. In the "Sound Treatise" it is also said that by studying the sound meanings of the elements, one can obtain common accomplishments, namely: The difference in its sound meanings, Clearly indicates the general form. By studying form, the body will decay. Through sound, one can understand all languages. Through smell, one can successfully absorb the essence. Through taste, things will become nectar. And so on.
