The mistaken forms of previous vows after recognition; clinging to "I"; disliking the perfection of others; accepting circumstances; particularly craving circumstances; being slightly arrogant and conceited; being angry and wrathful towards circumstances. Third, the subtle, vast, and limitless afflictions are of three types: twenty-five, fifty-one, and eighty-four thousand. The first, since the root ignorance is pervasive, it is not counted separately, but the five poisons that it pervades are each divided into five, thus making twenty-five. As stated in the 'Self-Arisen': Ignorance has five aspects: extremely obscured ignorance, unknowing ignorance, unseen ignorance, very dull ignorance, and extremely intoxicated ignorance. Desire also has five aspects: desire that craves, desire that intensely yearns, desire that disregards life, desire accompanied by hatred, and desire that moves in space. Hatred also has five aspects: hatred with strong desire, hatred accompanied by anger, very coarse hatred, hatred accompanied by ignorance, and hatred like seasonal thunderous rain. Pride also has five aspects: pride that overwhelms like a lion, unsurpassed pride like the sky, very brave pride like a tiger, self-important pride like a crow, and unequal and conceited pride like an elephant. Jealousy also has five aspects: subtle jealousy, jealousy arising from self, very rough jealousy, coarse jealousy, and jealousy clinging to views. These are the twenty-five afflictions. The second, fifty-one, refers to the twenty-five afflictions that take an object as their focus, and the twenty-five afflictions that grasp the subject, totaling fifty. Adding the root ignorance, there are fifty-one. The third, eighty-four thousand, are twenty-one thousand arising from desire, twenty-one thousand arising from hatred, twenty-one thousand arising from ignorance, and twenty-one thousand arising from equanimity, totaling eighty-four thousand. The eighty-four thousand afflictions are also clarified.

If divided infinitely, it is immeasurable and inconceivable. As it says in 'Self-Emergence': 'From that, inconceivable, inexpressible, countless arose.' These also arise from mind, intellect, memory, habits, and doubts, and emerge from all aspects, tainted by the stench of afflictions, thus becoming the karma that afflicts in samsara. As it says in 'Union of Sun and Moon': 'These and other afflictions are the mind that follows thoughts, the intellect that follows memories, the connecting habits, and the discriminations that are the basis of all doubts, and the aspects of grasping objects and things, etc., are immeasurable.' Thus, all karma and afflictions depend on the mind and mental factors of the three realms, which are the eight consciousnesses. The alaya-consciousness does not conceptualize objects, it is the non-conceptual pure consciousness that is the cause of the appearance of images. From that, the five sense consciousnesses arise: eye consciousness is non-conceptual grasping of form, ear consciousness is non-conceptual grasping of sound, nose consciousness is non-conceptual grasping of smell, tongue consciousness is non-conceptual grasping of taste, body consciousness is non-conceptual grasping of touch. After that, there are the two mind consciousnesses of grasper and grasped: the consciousness that first grasps the general is the mind consciousness, and the one that later grasps the particular is the afflicted mind, i.e., grasper and grasped. These two mind consciousnesses have three types: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral, and they also have conceptual and non-conceptual as appropriate. The five sense consciousnesses and the alaya-consciousness are non-conceptual. Thus, all the minds and fifty-one mental factors of the three realms are merely imputations to be abandoned, as it says in 'Two Truths': 'Mind and mental factors of the three realms, the aspects of imputation are all discriminations.' These are to be abandoned because they are the nature of ignorance. Here, the great treatises that desire enlightenment by making the mind the path, such as the Madhyamaka school, also divide mind and mind-essence into two, and summarize the nature of the eight, seven, or six consciousnesses as to be abandoned, and realize the mind-essence, which is naturally pure, as to be attained, thereby entering the practice of the path. Here too, it is somewhat similar, i.e., awareness and the mind-essence that arises from awareness, and one's own.
