It is said to be the mind that grasps at characteristics. In the Sixth Space Treasury, it says: "Alas, great Bodhisattva! The nature of awareness and the mind that arises from awareness is beyond all defilements and discriminations. In short, it is all the causes and results that transcend suffering. It is the realm of experience for those who see the self-manifesting light of awareness. The mind that grasps at its own characteristics is established as all that appears, all that exists, all that does not exist, appearance and sound, view and meditation, all actions that appear, grasping and discrimination, and afflictions, etc., all that appears as the object of thought. In short, all the phenomena of samsara are the mind that grasps at its own characteristics, the self-appearing karmas of the six classes of beings." So, one might think, are these two the same? There is a great difference. In the common vehicle, no matter what view, meditation, or action is done, one cannot transcend the mind. But here, awareness unmixed with mind, is exceedingly superior due to the key point of direct perception, and so on, there are many. Fourth, regarding the individual meanings, there are eight aspects: the support of the mind, the place, the path, the door, the essence, the capacity, the function, and the result. The support is the upper part of the physical body, the torso. The place is in the subtle tube of the vein between the heart and the lungs, where the power of awareness abides riding on the horse of wind. The wind is like a one-legged blind horse, and the power of awareness is like a dwarf with eyes. If these two are not mixed together, the thoughts of a thousand changes will not arise. The power of awareness naturally abides in awareness itself, so even when objects appear, one does not cling to them, and thus clear and lucid wisdom arises. This is the key point of wind, the reason for distinguishing wind and awareness. When these two are mixed, discrimination arises in a thousand different ways. The moving aspect is wind, and the knowing aspect is the power of awareness. Also, the actual awareness within the heart is like water, and from there, the power of capacity goes into the vein tube, so the mind mixed with wind is like a bubble of water. That mind is the capacity or power of awareness. Also, the mind follows the presence or absence of awareness, but awareness does not go back and forth following the presence or absence of mind. Therefore, in essence, awareness is not under the control of the mind, but is capacity.

Therefore, the mind is controlled by awareness. If awareness does not move, the mind's conceptualization will not arise, just as waves will not arise if water does not move. In the 'Self-Arisen' it says: The analogy of mind and awareness is like water and bubbles. The mind is not controlled. It is said in 'Self-Arisen': The path flows from the life-vein, and then the horse of the mind, the life-force flows. The doors are: the two, mouth and nose, because it is the door from which the air comes out. The essence is the nature of samsara, the grasped and the grasper. The function is to grasp onto objects and cling to self. The activity is to create various kinds of happiness and suffering in samsara. The result is that samsara and the lower realms are endless. It is also said in 'Self-Arisen': The state of impurity is, in the self-continuum of all sentient beings, the impure triple existence. That is also such a state: between the heart and lungs, there is a triple existence. Then it flows from the veins. The life-vein arises from the veins. The doors arise from the mouth and nose. From that arise eighty thousand, and other afflictions, arise in various ways. It says, and in the 'Vajrasattva Heart Mirror Tantra' it says: In all sentient beings who are sustained by life, afflictions called ignorance mostly exist. That also relies on the dependent aggregates of form, and exists between the heart and lungs. That is also not just ignorance, but exists adorned with all the accumulated habits called mind. That called mind exists together with the conceptualization of objects. Those three united are called ignorance, which is just samsara. From that arise the five poisons and six types. From that arise eighty thousand afflictions. From which path do those arise? In the middle connecting the lungs and heart, there is a red life-vein, which flows upwards inside something the size of a scallion stalk. That also flows upwards next to the vertebrae. That is also connected to the small left tip. Those flow riding on the horse of breath. That also flows from the mouth and nose, and from that arise karma and various afflictions. At the tip between the heart and lungs, the horse-vein of air from the lungs enters there, and the awareness-vein from the heart enters there, the two gather, and air and awareness mix.
