If it is said to be different, that is not permissible. Because purity and impurity coexist, it is clear. These and other faults do not exist. In the "Six Spaces" it says: The spontaneously accomplished basis of various kinds, is not the true basis. If it were so, it would become like this. These sentient beings, through effort, would not attain liberation, because they are defiled by ignorance. If it is said that liberation is attained through awareness, then would the result also not be liberation? For example, for black coal, even with clean wiping, it cannot be transformed into white color. Because cause and effect are different, it is not spontaneously accomplished. Similarly, if cause and effect are one, then all efforts become unnecessary. Therefore, is the so-called spontaneously accomplished basis established or not? Samantabhadra spoke to me, the great Bodhisattva spoken of by the teacher, just as you understand it, this is merely a knowable dharma, not the true nature. Thus it is said. Secondly, to also present a view on this, because self-nature is not established, it is uncertain, because it is transformed by conditions, it is uncertain. In the Mind Section it says: From the various uncertain names, the meaning is also merely nominally empty. Because self-nature is not certain, however it is nominally established, it appears as such. Thus it is said. Secondly, to refute this, if it is one, then it is not one, this contradicts the reasoning of direct contradiction and different substances. If the uncertain basis is the source of samsara, then it must be the source of samsara, this is clear from one's own words. If it is the basis of nirvana, it is also clear. Also, if the basis is pure, then it is not impure, this contradicts the acceptance of alternating uncertainty. Also, it would be unreasonable for it to revert from purity to impurity, because the basis has no fixed place. Also, samsara and nirvana would be mixed up with each other, because the basis is uncertain, so it can become anything. If it is admitted, then sentient beings would be liberated effortlessly, and the Buddha would become impure and return, experiencing suffering. Also, the basis would become definite, because it is definitely asserted that it is uncertain. There are many faults such as these. In the "Six Spaces" it says: The uncertain basis that is spoken of, this is also not a basis, this is how I understand it. Is the result alternatingly uncertain, or does it have transformation? The uncertain becomes certain, the uncertain becomes certain. One's own

Because uncertainty inherently exists, if it were certain, it would be like the end of karma. Are these not all knowable? The Teacher spoke thus. So it is said. The third is also stating the assertion: The essence is unchanging, like the sky. Appearances cannot be transformed, they must be like fire and water. The second is refuting it: Since the essence is nonexistent and appearances cannot be transformed, it is not reasonable for samsara to arise from that basis, and no one can be liberated. If nirvana existed from the beginning, it would be no different from eternalist heretics and would contradict the idea of liberation from causes and conditions. Even if one asserts that the essence of samsara is nirvana, so it does not change, then if the essence is nirvana, there is no need for liberation now, just as the heat of fire does not need to be changed now. If it is said that it is necessary for the mind's appearance, then it contradicts the fact that appearances cannot be transformed. If it is said that it is the appearance of samsara, not the appearance of the basis, then the basis would be dualistic, because if it is separate from the basis, there is the appearance of samsara. Furthermore, if one thinks that it is certain after realizing that basis, then it cannot be the basis, because before realization there is an object of realization, and then the mind of realization arises, so realization does not depend on the basis. Even if the basis depends on the mind of realization, it must exist before realization. If it is the basis even without realization, then how does one know it is the basis? If the mind knows, then the statement that it is the basis even without realization is refuted. Also, pointing out the faults of these and so on. In the "Six Spaces," it says: When teaching about the "certain basis," this is also not the true essence. For example, to those with yellow eyes, a conch appears yellow. Due to the difference of self-reversal, self and other are inseparable, free from the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Therefore, that is also not true. Or, because the cause is certain and the effect is certain, it becomes no different from the eternalist self. Are these not knowable? What was said is the same as above. So it is said. The fourth view is to state the assertion: The essence is not biased or limited, and appearances can be transformed in any way. The second is to refute it: If the basis can be transformed, then even the pure Buddha would become impure delusion, and without anyone's effort, sentient beings would become Buddhas and be liberated. Furthermore, the result would turn into the cause, because it is the basis of transformation. Also, material things like earth would turn into awareness, and awareness would turn into material.
