Having arisen, practicing the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and dedicating the merit of diligently engaging in virtuous deeds day and night, encompassed by the four immeasurables and the six perfections, are called the virtues that accord with liberation. Among these, the four immeasurables are: loving-kindness, wishing that sentient beings who lack happiness may encounter happiness; compassion, wishing that those tormented by suffering may be free from it; joy, wishing that those who possess happiness may not be separated from it; and equanimity, thinking with impartiality towards those who are near and far, attached and hateful. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Having love for all sentient beings, having the thought of meeting and parting, having the thought of not separating, having the thought of benefit and happiness, I prostrate to you.' And so on. The six perfections are: the mind of generosity, wishing to give one's possessions to others, along with its virtuous activity; discipline, the mind of abandoning non-virtuous aspects, along with its virtuous activity; patience, the mind of enduring without anger towards harm from others, along with its virtuous activity; diligence, taking joy in virtuous actions, along with its activity; meditation, the mind abiding single-pointedly on an object, along with its activity; and wisdom, understanding the meaning of the words and teachings of the Dharma, along with its activity. Practicing all of these within the state of appearance yet without inherent existence is the perfection. The activity of generosity is that those things are obtained by others. Similarly, not harming others, not retaliating with anger, practicing virtue, the arising of shamatha and vipashyana through the mind abiding, and having no doubt after realization are the activities. Knowing that nothing is established, yet engaging in the collection of appearances is the wondrous activity of the perfection. As stated in the Commentary on the Awakening Mind: 'Having known that all phenomena are emptiness, relying on virtuous actions and their results, this is more wondrous than wonder, this is more amazing than amazing.' And so on. Through this, vast benefit for sentient beings in samsara is also accomplished. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Odzung: 'Although abiding in equality through the patience of no-self, great compassion arises for sentient beings. Although giving generosity in order to fully ripen them, there is no expectation for the ripening of karma. In thought, one constantly abides in nirvana, yet one's conduct abides in samsara, although one has realized that all phenomena are emptiness.'

Having faith in the ripening of karma. Thus it is said. Among them, the first five perfections are the accumulation of merit, and the last one is the accumulation of wisdom. The first three are the cause and essence of the training in discipline, meditation is the mind, wisdom is the training in wisdom, and diligence is the companion of all. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Having mastered the three trainings, the Victorious Ones declared the six perfections. The first three and the last two, in two ways, one also belongs to all three. Generosity and discipline are the accumulation of merit, wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom, the other three are both, and all five are the accumulation of wisdom." Thus it is said. Also, as stated in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: "All these limbs, the Able One declared for the sake of wisdom." Thus it is said. According to the Ornament of the Sutras, generosity is merit, wisdom is wisdom, the other four are both, or the first one is merit, and the remaining five are wisdom. Although it is thought so, here it is said according to the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life. Among them, whatever virtue is done, the preliminary is the generation of bodhicitta, the main practice is the realization of no self-nature, and the conclusion is the dedication. Being encompassed by these three is in accordance with liberation. If not encompassed, it is difficult to become a cause of liberation on this ground of practice with aspiration. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Mostly meaningless, meaningful, and always meaningful, should be known." Thus it is said, in the path of accumulation, if not encompassed by these three, then mostly meaningless, and from the first to the seventh ground it is meaningful. In the three pure grounds, it is always meaningful, therefore the vast two accumulations are perfected. Also, above the first ground, the ten powers are obtained, therefore the immeasurable accumulation is perfected, and below the first ground, even if effort is made, it is difficult to perfect. Here, summarizing its meaning: Especially the vast virtue of the Great Vehicle, the preliminary is the generation of bodhicitta, the main practice is without object, and the conclusion is completely encompassed by dedication, are the three essentials for entering the path of liberation. The meaning of this has been explained. Here, the skillful means of compassion is whatever virtue is done, it exists at that time, and the wisdom of emptiness is simultaneously united, therefore there is no before or after. Some think that when meditating on the nature of reality, the compassion of the preliminary and the emptiness of the main practice are united, this is completely not understanding the point, the past is unreal, and the present is real, the union is a laughing matter.
