I, with merit, make the body happy, with wisdom, make the mind happy, for the sake of others, even if staying in samsara, what sorrow do those with compassion have? Thus it is said. Riding the horse of bodhicitta, going from happiness to happiness, what kind of mind would become lazy? Thus it is said. Here, the instruction is to transform the inferior merit portion into the liberation portion, that is: Goodness is also a merit portion, the cause of samsara. Transforming from that, practice the liberation portion. To abandon samsara, one should abandon its cause. If one does not desire samsara, then one needs to abandon its cause. Because it involuntarily enters into existence, one should abandon non-virtuous actions, and the two, virtuous actions and merit portion, and only strive for the liberation portion. The merit portion is the cause of existence, so in meaning it belongs to the category of non-virtue. As the teacher Nagarjuna said: From virtuous actions comes happiness, from non-virtuous actions comes suffering, not relying on the two is liberation. Thus it is said. Now, concluding with the instruction to practice the virtuous actions of the liberation portion: The five perfections with appearance are merit, and wisdom, one should rely on the two accumulations. Those who desire to quickly become Buddhas should practice its cause, that is, the perfection of means with appearance, which is the accumulation of merit, the five such as generosity, and the perfection of wisdom without appearance, which is the accumulation of wisdom, one should meditate on the emptiness of the nature of reality. As it is said in the Ratnavali: Therefore, these two accumulations are the cause of attaining Buddhahood, therefore one should always rely on them. Thus it is said. Means and wisdom need to be united, because holding that emptiness of mind alone is sufficient is not a good path. The Sutra Gathering All Distinctions says: Maitreya! If foolish people say that only wisdom is the path, then wouldn't my practice of the five perfections for many kalpas be meaningless? And the Sutra Requested by Anavatapta says: The demonic activity of a Bodhisattva is wisdom without means, and means without wisdom. And the Sutra Requested by Ocean of Intelligence says: Without cause, and the manifestation of being separated from cause, there will be nothing that is not accomplished, if one does not strive for the five perfections, then the demonic

This is the sixth hook. If one cannot transcend these hooks of the demons, there is no possibility of attaining complete and perfect enlightenment, let alone anything else. As stated in the Vimalakirti Sutra: A Bodhisattva who relies only on wisdom falls into the nirvana of the Shravakas and will not go to the non-abiding nirvana. Therefore, wisdom without skillful means is a bondage for Bodhisattvas. As stated in the Compendium: Without skillful means and devoid of wisdom, one falls into the state of a Shravaka. As stated in the Gaya Gori Sutra: Wisdom without skillful means is a wrong path, and skillful means without wisdom is also a wrong path. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Surpassing Intellect: Through wisdom without skillful means, what has not arisen will not arise; and through skillful means without wisdom, the wise will not attain perfect peace. As stated in the Dohas: Whoever enters emptiness devoid of compassion will not find the supreme path. However, if one meditates only on compassion, one will remain in samsara and will not attain liberation. Whoever is able to combine the two will not remain in samsara and will not remain in nirvana. Therefore, having faith in the countless scriptural statements of the Sutras and Tantras, one should joyfully accumulate the two pure accumulations without weariness throughout the ocean of eons, and put on the great armor. This concludes the extensive commentary on the sixteenth chapter, Thinking About the Results of Actions, from The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury, a treatise on the essential instructions of the Great Vehicle. Sixteenth: Commentary on the Chapter on Thinking About the Results of Actions.
