Those faithful who enter and follow the teachings of the Buddha should contemplate how rare it is, even more so than the Buddha's appearance in the world. Generate joy within yourself and do not waste your precious human life with leisure and opportunity. Similarly, contemplate the remaining reasons, which also demonstrate how difficult it is to obtain, like this: Likewise, born with incomplete faculties, in a borderland, Without connection to Dharma, with perverted karmic extremes, Disbelieving in the teachings, not righteous, a friend of sin. After thoroughly contemplating their vast numbers, That I have not become one of them, but obtained a body suitable for Dharma, I must contemplate this day and night. Like this, contemplate those with incomplete faculties, such as the blind, and think, "How wonderful that my faculties are complete! I will practice Dharma." After contemplating this, look at the remote regions of the southern continent of Jambudvipa, those borderlands where the sound of the Three Jewels is not heard, and at stones and Mongolians, etc. Generate joy within yourself and strive in Dharma. Some people have not even the slightest connection to Dharma. Whatever they do—eating, sleeping, walking, sitting—they do not remember the Three Jewels for even a moment, and have never uttered the words "I take refuge" even once. There are also those with perverted karmic extremes, who initially entered the Dharma but later turned away and commit all kinds of sins. And there are those who do not believe in the teachings of the Buddha, and those who only commit sins. Thinking of these, there must be many like this in other places as well. How wonderful that I was not born into such a race! With joy, strive in Dharma. If one's own conditions are complete, then determine that you have the karmic connection to practice Dharma. It is also shown that the favorable conditions for practicing Dharma are well-complete, and that good karma has been awakened, which is: Having become a human, born in the central land, with complete faculties and faith, With karmic extremes not perverted, possessing correct view, These are difficult to obtain, possessing the karmic connection for practice. Generally, "having a connection" means having something unfinished. Here, it means that in a previous life, there was unfinished Dharma practice. At the time of birth, due to the habits of good deeds from the past, awakened by whatever karmic conditions, one practices the Dharma that was previously unfinished. This is obtained through the unerring logic of cause and effect. As a sign of awakened good karma, one has obtained a human body, the basis for divine Dharma, and therefore possesses favorable conditions, and the teachings endure.

Being born in the central region is fortunate; having the basis for hearing and thinking, with complete senses, is fortunate; having faith in the path of liberation, the correct path, is fortunate; not turning back from the gateway of entry, the end of karma, is fortunate; not being born into a lineage of sectarianism, of wrong views, is fortunate. Because of having done white virtuous deeds in the past, having obtained a human body and so forth in this life, it is certain that there is a continuation of karma. What are the signs that some, although they obtain a human body in this life, will never obtain a human body in the future? The Essence of Earth Sutra says: There are ten types of people who are difficult to find as human beings in samsara. What are they? Those who do not generate roots of virtue, do not accumulate merit, follow evil friends, connect with afflictions, do not fear the suffering of future lives, have their minds disturbed by afflictions, are always distracted from the Dharma due to laziness and distraction, even if they enter the Buddha's teachings, they do not practice them, follow wrong views, and hold wrong views firmly. These are mentioned in Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior: With actions like mine, even a human body will be difficult to obtain. If I do not obtain a human body, there will only be evil and no virtue. When there is an opportunity to practice virtue, at that time I did not do it. Therefore, the cause of doing evil now and the continuation of karma will cause suffering in the lower realms, while the continuation of karma from doing white virtuous deeds now will lead to enjoying the bliss and glory of the higher realms. Therefore, when one obtains leisure and endowments, it is proper to practice the Dharma. The Sutra of Meeting Father and Son says: Completely abandoning all eight unfavorable conditions, having obtained the rare leisure and endowments, and having found faith in the teachings of the Sugata, wise people should practice the yoga of wisdom. Therefore, when other favorable conditions are complete, it is proper to strive in the Dharma: When other endowments are complete, striving, which is difficult to find, is also possible. The Teacher has come, the Dharma is taught, the teachings remain, and followers practice. Loving friends and harmonious conditions are rare, therefore, one should make effort in diligence. When we practice the Dharma of liberation, the abundance of other favorable conditions encourages me, and at this time when it is possible to practice well, we must strive to practice the sacred Dharma. First, the thought of enlightenment.
