Thus it is. Moreover, in the *Ratnakuta Sutra*, it says: "Even if some sentient beings do not have faith in the Tathagata because of the obscurations of karma that constantly revolve, the roots of virtue that they see are meaningful until they fully attain nirvana." Therefore, in order for sentient beings to be liberated from samsara, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas manifest infinite skillful means. And since sentient beings also possess the Buddha-nature, they will gradually attain nirvana. This is clearly stated in all the sutras and tantras. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that nihilists cannot attain nirvana, as this takes into account the long time it takes for them to be liberated. If it is argued that samsara has an end, that is also unreasonable. We promise that all beings will gradually attain enlightenment, but we do not promise that samsara has an end. Because becoming a Buddha is nirvana, not the end of samsara, the end of samsara is samsara itself, just as the end of a field is still a field. Because nothing is established by its own nature, it is also unreasonable to speak of liberation and beginninglessness. In the *Bodhicitta-vrtti* it says: "Whatever momentary consciousness, its basis is not permanent. If the mind is impermanent, how can it contradict emptiness? From the very beginning, gradually, it is established that self-nature is never present. If things are established by self-nature, then non-self-nature cannot be expressed. Having said that, the mind abandons the abiding of self. Transcending one's own self-nature, these are not things that exist. Just as the sweetness of sugarcane and the nature of fire is heat, similarly, the nature of all things is said to be emptiness." Thus it is said. In general, the refutation of other-power is: Because whatever appears as real does not have even a little bit of self-nature, therefore there is no other-power, like the moon in water. The moon in water and the moon in the sky are also the same, because they appear in the eye, arise from conditions, and are produced by the cause of habitual delusion, so there is no difference. Therefore, the various things that appear externally are not established as other, but are nominally known as the increase of the habitual tendencies of one's own mind, but they are not established in ultimate truth. When there is no other, other-power is negated, just as when there is no ghost, the power of the ghost is negated. In the *Samadhiraja Sutra* it says: "Just as the moon rises in the clear sky, its image

Like reflections in a clear lake, They gather empty water moons, devoid of essence. Know all phenomena to be just like that. Therefore, other-dependence is untenable, because it is produced by the preceding moment, and changes in the second moment, and because it is a dependent, a designation, the opposite of other-dependence, and the nature of dependent arising. 'The power of others exists,' this refers only to the appearance of existence in name, not to the entity itself. As stated earlier: If analyzed thoroughly with wisdom, there is no examination and no other-dependence. If the established entity does not exist, how can it be distinguished by wisdom? So it is said. The eight consciousnesses cannot be one or different, meaning the eight consciousnesses cannot be one substance, otherwise the eye could also hear sounds, leading to the absence of deafness and blindness. Setting the mind consciousness as conceptual and the five sense consciousnesses as non-conceptual is also untenable, because it would imply that the eight consciousnesses reside in each location like an eyeball. Therefore, the eight consciousnesses cannot be one, nor can they be different. There are also three refutations of the ālaya: refuting permanence, refuting the object, and refuting the seed. Among them, the ālaya of habitual tendencies, the very root of samsara, should be refuted because it appears to exist when it does not. Even if one considers the ālaya of ultimate truth to be real, it must be refuted to reverse attachment. First, the permanence of the substance connecting moments is untenable. There is no connection at the same time, because there is no need for connection, i.e., because it is not interrupted. If it is not at the same time, then it cannot be connected, because interruption and non-interruption are contradictory substances. And the non-establishment of the moment of contact also refutes it. Therefore, the continuity like a moment is also not many, and the past continuity has ceased, and the future continuity has not yet arisen. As the Two Truths state: Why the continuity of the aggregates, this is like the flame of a lamp. And: What is called continuity and collection, like a garland, an army, etc., is false. Refuting the object, the ālaya cannot focus on the vast container and contents of the world. If the general meaning of the container and contents is appearance, then it will be manifestly determined by conceptual thought. If it is clear as non-existent, then it has not focused on the actual container and contents. If the self-characteristic of the object appears, then it is like darkness and obscuration.
