Appearances are merely dependent origination, and are called illusory appearances. As Nagarjuna said: If there were no dependent origination, how could there be suffering? The impermanence and suffering that are spoken of do not exist in their own nature. And: Apart from dependent origination, there are no phenomena. Therefore, apart from emptiness, there are no phenomena. Thus, the assertion of karma as a cause is refuted. Killing and stealing, when the object is divided into three times and examined for contact, or divided into prior and subsequent moments, are like stealing at a time when it has ceased, so the object is not established, and this is the same for everything. Therefore, actions of false appearance are like dreams, and are without inherent existence. The Root Wisdom says: If action existed by its own nature, how could anything arise from conditions? Therefore, for that which harms emptiness, there is no arising. So it is. Cessation is also like that. Because suffering and its origin are refuted, the cessation of those two is also refuted. If there is no basis for refutation, there is no cessation, just as a healthy person does not need medicine. The same text says: If suffering existed by its own nature, cessation would not be appropriate. So it is. Refuting the path: When meditating on the path as an antidote to afflictions, do you meditate on afflictions and the path simultaneously or separately? If simultaneously, then in the same continuum, what is to be abandoned and the antidote are contradictory substances. If separately, then they cannot be what harms and what is harmed, like this year's medicine for last year's disease. That path also does not go upwards, because going itself has been divided into three times and refuted. It cannot be a path, because whatever is traversed by what, the traveler and the path, are refuted by being simultaneous, separate, permanent, and impermanent. The Way of the Bodhisattva says: For consciousness without a body, contact is not appropriate. The Root Wisdom says: When a lamp is being born, it does not meet with darkness. How can a lamp dispel darkness as it is being born? Even if the lamp does not meet with darkness, if it dispels darkness, then all the darkness that exists in the world will be dispelled by the darkness that exists here. So it is. Because the path and what is to be abandoned by it do not meet in prior and subsequent moments, they are not established. It is not possible to realize cessation, because cessation itself has been refuted, so realizing cessation is also refuted. If what is to be refuted has passed away, then cessation is not necessary; if it has not ceased, then it cannot be refuted.

, and if these two (the establisher and the established) exist simultaneously, it is not possible because their essence is contradictory and different. If they do not exist simultaneously, then they cannot be the object to be refuted and the refuter, because it is simply not established. Like the path of accumulation and so on, if the wisdom of meditation itself is the path of accumulation and so on, then it cannot be a different entity of the object to be meditated upon and the meditator. If it is something else, then it is impossible for that path not to be that wisdom, therefore meditation becomes meaningless. Therefore, all four noble truths are not established. As it says in the *Lankavatara Sutra*: "Non-arising is the true truth, children speak of four truths, sitting under the Bodhi tree, not even one truth is seen, let alone four truths." Also, as it says in the *Perfection of Wisdom Sutra*: "The noble truths are also without self-nature." Refuting the ultimate truth of the creator has two aspects: refuting the corporeal and refuting the temporal. First, regarding those atoms, there are five investigations, namely, contact and non-contact: If coarse matter is created, do the atoms contact each other or not? The Vaisheshika school among the non-Buddhists believes that they contact. The Sravaka-Vibhajyavada believes that they are with intervals. The Sautrantika believes that they adhere but do not touch. If they contact, then when the central atom contacts the atoms of the six directions, does it contact with a part of the six faces? Or does it contact with the very face that contacts with the east, etc.? If it contacts with six faces, then the central atom itself becomes six parts, because there are six contacting faces. If you say that it adheres to all six directions such as the east, then the atom of the six faces itself becomes only the cover of the east, because it adheres to the east face, just like the atom itself. If it does not adhere, then is the space in between separated by the atoms of light and darkness or not? Not separated is not possible, because the interval of corporeal matter can only be grayish or dark. If it is separated, then does it adhere to the atoms of light and darkness or not? If it adheres, then it cannot be other than adhering with six faces or one face. If it does not adhere, then there will be a space there as well, therefore, in that space, there are only two possibilities: light and darkness enter or do not enter. If it does not adhere at all, then an elephant can fit inside a mustard seed, because the interval is limitless. Furthermore, if it does not adhere, then because there is a space, cutting the body with a sword, destroying a castle with a cannonball, a pillar supporting a roof, and sound coming from a drum will all be interrupted.
