Oh, that is not established either. If Buddhahood is not attained, it is impossible to abandon all the subtle negative karmic imprints. Because the Hearer Arhats, by way of location, time, nature, and characteristics, do not understand the meaning of eons, and need to ask about the path. The Uttaratantra states: "Therefore, until Buddhahood is attained, Nirvana is impossible. Just as one cannot see the sun after abandoning light and rays." It is also unreasonable to assert that lineage is fixed. Since obscurations are adventitious, they are equally amenable to purification, and if they are purified, there is no reason why Hearers cannot become Buddhas. The situation of the Noble Ones is that they speak in this way to cause those of lesser faculties to abandon fear and enter into the rest from the suffering of samsara. The White Lotus Sutra states: "What is said to be Nirvana in this way is that you are liberated from the sufferings of samsara, but you have not yet completely attained Nirvana. Seek this supreme vehicle of Buddhahood. The emanations of the guides are like this: they show Nirvana for the sake of rest. After resting, one will completely attain Nirvana. Strive to reach the state of omniscience." It also says: "Shariputra will also become a Tathagata named Lotus Light." It also says: "Rahula will also become a Tathagata named Moon Top." It also says: "These Hearers, until they are urged by the Buddhas, remain in a single wisdom body, fainting in a drunken stupor of samadhi. After being urged, they arise with attachment to the welfare of sentient beings in various forms, accumulate merit and wisdom, and attain Buddhahood and enlightenment." Thus, abiding in the realm of cessation for ten thousand eons, after being urged, they are born from lotuses in pure realms, and initially generate the mind of enlightenment. The Great Nirvana Sutra states: "Arhats also enter into cessation after completely attaining Nirvana, and after ten thousand eons, they generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Having generated the mind in this way, when practicing the path, due to the habit of the former evil mind of seeking only peace, the mind that is weary of samsara and desires to quickly attain Nirvana hinders the perfection of the accumulation of purifying Buddha-fields and ripening sentient beings.

Due to cutting off, the newly initiated Bodhisattva and the initial generation of Bodhicitta are simultaneous. However, it is said that the Sravaka's generation of Bodhicitta is delayed by forty kalpas. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Those two, again and again, because their minds are always endowed, for the sake of attaining the joy of Nirvana, it is considered that their realization is slow.' 'Those two' refer to the Arhats of Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who generate Bodhicitta. Then, do the Arhats of Sravakas realize emptiness or not? Some ancient teachers believe that they do not realize the selflessness of persons, while the Pratyekabuddhas realize the selflessness of the apprehended objects. Therefore, both do not realize it. Some argue that they do realize it. But I think it should be understood in this way: In the past, when the Sravaka schools were divided, some schools believed in the existence of self, some did not, and some believed it to be like an image. Because the paths of practice were different, the results were also in accordance with the previous paths. Therefore, there were two situations: realization and non-realization. Among them, the Arhats who entered the path of the Vaibhashika school, because they were accustomed to clinging to things that existed before, only realized the selflessness of persons, but did not realize the selflessness of phenomena, because they clung to characteristics. If one practices the path from the perspective of the Sutra school, because of the depth of wisdom, one realizes things that are like images. I think it should be understood in this way. Among them, those with sharp faculties infer from the nature of form and realize that all phenomena are empty. Those with dull faculties do not understand anything other than what is indicated. Because they are consistent in realizing the selflessness of nature, both must realize the emptiness of the aggregates. As stated in the Garland of Jewels: 'As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is clinging to self. If there is clinging to self, there is also karma, and from karma, rebirth occurs.' And, if one realizes that one thing is selfless, one must realize that all things are selfless. As stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: 'The emptiness of one is the emptiness of all. Looking at one is said to be looking at all. That is what those who observe the Dharma say.' Therefore, knowing that the fault of clinging to self leads to samsara, one knows that all phenomena are selfless. Whether the faculties are sharp or dull, they are consistent in this point. But the dull ones think that the nature of Dharma is that all phenomena are without a basis.
