It is thought that it pervades equally in any direction, like in a container such as a vase. However, if there is a self, then the non-pervasive, transferring self, like a broken pot or a flying bird, would become impermanent. And the pervasive, stable self, because it cannot function, would become meaningless. As it says in the Four Hundred: Some see it as small as a mustard seed, some see it as big as a human body, some see it as all-pervading, the wise realize it is non-existent. The example is not established because space, a vase, and a king are not established. Space has no basis, so it cannot be an example for the self. A vase is different, so it cannot be an example either. A king does not pervade the people, and essence and substance are different, so the example is not established. Habituation is meaningless. If the nature of mind is permanent, then meditating on the path is meaningless, because abandoning old faults, taking on new qualities, and the continuum becoming better than before are all impossible, therefore it would follow that there is no liberation. As it says there: What harm is there to the permanent? Where is liberation without harm? Temporary impermanence has been negated. One is not liberated by knowledge, because that self is not liberated by knowledge, because it is not an object of knowledge, like the chief. Because one meditates on the non-existent as existent, one is not liberated again, because that is wrong knowledge. In this way, those who claim to be on their own side, who think that all phenomena are their own mind, who think that the mind is immutable, and who think that once they have realized the view, they do not need to accumulate merit and virtue, are also negated. We, on the other hand, do not attach anything with conceptual mind to the nature of mind, the nature of phenomena, and the basis, and we do not slander appearances and the two accumulations, and cause and effect, so we accomplish enlightenment in the way of illusory appearance, emptiness, and no basis. In short, the refutation of those who think that the Vedas are a valid means of knowledge, along with the related refutations, has been explained. Now, to determine the tenets of the Jains, along with the related refutations: The Jains follow Brahma, take the teachings of the Victorious One as valid, and think that the meaning of words is not seven but one. Therefore, they have abandoned the meaning of the sacred and dwell in the dense forest of existence. Those who practice naked asceticism are Brahma...

And adhering to the teachers of Brahmanism, following in the footsteps of the Supreme Conqueror, dividing all knowable things into seven semantic categories, and even condensing the infinite lights into one nature of multiple places, times, and numbers. Those who seek liberation through this path enter into the extremely unbearable dense forest of existence, dwelling in a difficult time of liberation. If its tenets are broadly divided, there are those who regard Brahma as a god and the Supreme Conqueror as a teacher. Among the sects that consider the Vaiśeṣika and other tenets as valid, there are the Naked Ones, the Ascetics, the Brahma-vādins, the Ash-smeared Ones, the Direction-clothed Ones, the Sky-clothed Ones, the Conqueror Ones, the Vaiśeṣika Ones, and those known as the Wanderers. Because they are naked without clothes, they are called the Naked Ones. Because they dwell in places where the sky is visible and believe they are pure because there is no covering, they are called the Sky-clothed Ones or the Direction-clothed Ones. Because they practice austerities such as fasting, they are called the Ascetics. Because they adhere to Brahma as a god, they are called the Brahma-vādins. Because they adhere to the Brahman Conqueror as a teacher, they are called the Conqueror Ones. Because they rely on the tenets of the Vaiśeṣika, they are called the Vaiśeṣika Ones. Because they smear their bodies with ash, they are called the Ash-smeared Ones. Because they wander in all uncertain places, they are called the Wanderers. According to the views of these sects, all knowable things are condensed into two
