Those who do not want to know that there is no face. Striving only for virtuous roots with characteristics is not a practitioner. They are called deceitful. The Ratnakuta Sutra says: "A monk who has a mind of duality is blessed by Mara. One who does not believe in the Mahayana is deceived by Mara." Thus, it is advised to abandon them: associating with them cuts off the path to liberation. Virtuous deeds decrease, and even the state of happiness and good rebirths cannot be achieved. Needless to say, the attainment of peaceful enlightenment is impossible. Therefore, one should abandon evil friends. By relying on evil friends or bad gurus, virtuous deeds decrease and non-virtuous deeds increase. Not only are the temporary fruits of happiness of gods and humans not achieved, but also the path to liberation is cut off. Needless to say, the ultimate attainment of peaceful enlightenment is impossible. The Collection of Specially Expressed Verses says: "Those who have no faith and are stingy, those who lie and are divisive, the wise should not befriend them, and should not associate with sinful people. If one relies on someone who should not be relied upon, one becomes tainted by their faults. Just as when an arrow is placed in a pit smeared with poison, even the one not smeared with poison becomes contaminated." Thus. From the perspective of harm, the reason for abandoning is explained with an example: Just as travelers walking on a dangerous road fear being robbed by thieves, they may lose their wealth and life in this life, but they cannot steal eternal happiness. These are listed as clear examples. Therefore, the advice is not to rely on an enemy more terrifying than this, but to be cautious: those beings who rely on evil spiritual friends are despised by the holy ones, abandoned by the gods of the white side, generate much harm and suffering, and are ruined even in this life. In the next life, they fall into the lower realms and wander in samsara forever. Those who are not afraid of losing the supreme treasure of happiness are deceived by Mara. If one relies on an evil spiritual friend, one will be despised by the holy ones, abandoned by the guardian deities, generate much harm and suffering, and all unwanted things will befall them. Not only are there many faults in this life, but also in the next life one will fall into the three lower realms and wander in samsara forever. Therefore, one should generate a mind of renunciation like guarding against an ordinary enemy and stay far away from evil friends.

Because after being persuaded, one will regress from the good. Although it is said like this, if one relies again on top of not being afraid, one should know that one is being deceived by the demon. Furthermore, one should avoid (bad friends) like being afraid of hunters, being afraid of hawks, being afraid of small mice being afraid of cats, being afraid of executioners, and being afraid of mad elephants. As it is said in the Sutra of the Holy Great Nirvana: Bodhisattvas fear evil friends more than they fear mad elephants. Because elephants only destroy the body of this life, while evil friends destroy the permanent body and life of virtue. By making extensive observations and analyses, one establishes examples of what should be avoided: Just as in the world, there is a metaphor: When going to a distant place, one must investigate and inquire about good and bad. Those who desire liberation do not investigate and inquire about virtuous friends. Foolish people are actually destroyed by the hordes of demons. Just as when walking on a dangerous road, one must seek a guide, and one must also examine whether one is capable, and one must also ask others. In the world, even accomplishing something for just one day requires this. So, for the path to attaining permanent happiness and liberation, one needs the guidance of a lama. If one does not examine whether he possesses qualities or not, one enters casually. Without consulting other wise people, blindly relying on foolish people who have merit is a very great fault. This situation is very common nowadays. This is actually being destroyed by the demon who deceives one away from liberation. It is not just relying on bad knowledge, but also if one desires liberation while engaging in wrong Dharma, mixed Dharma, and fabricated Dharma, it is truly astonishing. Like this: Even when buying and selling inferior goods, if one does not know, one asks others. Nowadays, whatever (Dharma) one encounters, one enters that Dharma path. Without discriminating wisdom, listening and thinking are just superficial. Those with eyes do not ask and investigate others. Many people who desire liberation are deceived by demons. Even when buying inferior goods such as silk, clothes, horses, and jewels, if one knows, one will examine the good and bad. If one does not understand, one will ask those who know. Now, in order to achieve liberation and enlightenment, the most precious wealth is the supreme Dharma, and one
