Ninth, Commentary on the Chapter of Abandoning Evil Companions. Ninth, Commentary on the Chapter of Abandoning Evil Companions. Thus, for those who rely on virtuous spiritual friends, it is advised to diligently abandon evil companions, who are the opposite of them. Thus, after relying well on virtuous spiritual friends, abandon evil companions and their companions. Just as light and darkness abandon each other, with the characteristic of being contradictory, realize that virtuous spiritual friends and evil spiritual friends, along with their companions, cannot coexist. It is advised that those who desire virtue should not rely on the side of evil, because one needs to abandon the opposing factors that should be abandoned and strive for liberation. In the Ornament of the Tree Sutra, it says: "Son of good family, if you wish to manifest the root of virtue, you should rely on virtuous spiritual friends, but never rely on evil companions. Why is that? Because they obstruct the side of virtue." Furthermore, evil is a friend and relative who increases the side of non-virtue, hence an evil spiritual friend. Among them, for those who pretend to be Dharma-like Khenpos, and those who appear as teachers and lamas, and those who are evil friends and obstruct virtue. For those who pretend to be friends who care for me and are close to me, whether relying on the side of householders or renunciates, what are their characteristics and nature? To show those who do not know, it is explained here. They are also those who have strong afflictions and bad minds. Seeking this life, not turning away from worldly affairs. With little learning and contemplation, they are ignorant of the objects of knowledge. Lacking faith and diligence, they stay away from the assembly of virtues. Whether it is a teacher or a friend, whoever has these qualities is said to have the nature of evil, which means: because the six root afflictions are strong, their minds are bad, they do not turn away from samsara and seek the prosperity of this life, because they lack the wealth of learning and contemplation, they are ignorant of the meaning of what is to be known, and because they lack faith and diligence in the path of liberation, their minds do not associate with virtue. Furthermore, there are others, such as: the three doors of body, speech, and mind are not tamed, they have arrogance and hypocrisy. They scold others and do not have pure perception and respect. They crave food, drink, wealth, and wrong teachings. Their minds

Due to mixing with the mundane, the three doors of body, speech, and mind are not pacified. Due to the towering mountain of pride, one is filled with arrogance. Deceiving others with appearances, one is skilled in hypocrisy. Due to the raging winds of jealousy, one slanders others. Due to strong bias and attachment, one lacks pure perception of anything. Due to a lack of merit and experience, one has no faith or respect. Due to not being moistened by the dampness of samadhi, one has a great craving for food and drink. Due to a lack of contentment from the depths of one's heart, one has a strong attachment to wealth and possessions. Due to having no connection with the path of liberation, one believes in wrong views. Due to not having a true guru, one does not receive the blessings of the lineage. Furthermore, Breaking vows and commitments, one's mind is agitated. Associating with others leads them onto the wrong path of delusion. Non-virtue increases, and goodness diminishes. These are the characteristics of a bad friend and their companions. Due to little shame and weak antidotes, vows and commitments are broken. Due to not cultivating peace and patience, one's mind is agitated upon seeing and hearing. Due to bad conduct and fortune, those who associate with one Become infected with afflictions. Due to little learning, contemplation, and accumulation, one leads oneself and others onto the wrong path. Due to the entry of demons and great obstacles, one is inauspicious for oneself and others. Due to being accustomed to strong afflictions, non-virtuous actions increase. Due to being far from good Dharma, there is no auspiciousness or goodness. Due to not being separated from the mind of the Lesser Vehicle, one abandons the path of the Great Vehicle. Due to the three skills of experience and realization not being perfected, one lacks the qualities of the signs of the path. In short, whoever one associates with, goodness declines and evil increases, this is their nature. As it is said in the holy *Ratnakuta Sutra*: A bad friend causes non-virtue to increase, distances one from virtue, diminishes goodness, turns one away from the great path of liberation, brings one closer to the city of samsara, and is the nature of gathering all faults. A bad friend, the faults of associating with them are immeasurable: one's own mind is evil and pure perception is weak, one is full of prejudice and holds one's own side as superior, one praises oneself and slanders others, abandons the true Dharma, and slanders the virtuous friends of the Great Vehicle. Just as those who are near unclean mud are pervaded by a foul odor, and its faults are contagious. Relying on bad people is also like that.
