Suffering, discomfort, and so on, appear as various kinds of misery. Furthermore, the fruits of happiness arising from one's own previous virtuous deeds are: pretas obtaining food and the like, experiencing slight comfort; day and night alternating, with some small suffering in between; Buddhas and their offspring emitting miraculous light, pacifying suffering—all these are the results of virtuous deeds. Whether it be the state of gods, asuras, humans, or evil destinies, the fruits of one's own previous virtuous deeds follow like a shadow. Wherever one is born, whether one has a beautiful form, a happy mind, obtains food and drink, is adorned with wealth and fame, is powerful, or even experiences slight comfort from resting on the road, although it is only a temporary respite, the fundamental cause is virtuous deeds. No matter from what source the conditions of happiness arise, they should be regarded as the result of virtuous deeds. Even temporary happiness, or the happiness that comes from the alternation of day and night or morning and evening when one becomes a naga, is the result of virtuous deeds. In hells and other places, or when afflicted by illness, the slight comfort felt occasionally should also be recognized as the result of virtuous deeds. In the hells and other places of sentient beings, the comfort brought about by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas emitting light is also solely the result of one's own accumulated karma of generating happiness by being touched by light, although the external condition is the light of the Buddha. Thus, if happiness and suffering both arise simultaneously in the same body and mind, it is also due to alternating karma. For humans, too, dwellings, possessions, retinue, fame, wealth, longevity, freedom from illness, and so on, appear as various forms of happiness; while suffering includes birth, old age, sickness, and death; separation from loved ones, encountering enemies, unpleasantness, loss of what is desired, decline of wealth, being afflicted by poverty, being unpraised, cold and heat, hunger and thirst, and so on, possessing various kinds of unbearable sufferings. All these are caused by one's own illusory appearances of karma. Thus, experiencing a mixture of happiness and suffering through mixed karma is: even when born as a human, whether these occur alternately in one's own continuum or in different people's continua, having a good dwelling, great possessions, a comfortable seat, a large retinue

as well as fame, wish fulfillment, longevity, few illnesses, a day or a moment of ease, being arranged to attend banquets and gain wealth, or seeing flowers and other pleasing things and feeling happy, and so on. There are also showers of suffering, birth, aging, sickness, death, the worry of separation from relatives and friends, encountering enemies, the occurrence of unwanted events, the worry of separation from friends, the decrease of wealth, the decline of former merits such as fame, falling into distress, bad words, cold and heat, hunger and thirst, fatigue, depression and discomfort, and so on. These unpleasant appearances are also manifested by the power of different karmas. As it is said in the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness: Karma creates various things, like a painter. The Asuras who dwell inside Mount Meru and so on, also because of their nature of envying the glory of the gods, they fight and are displeased, harming each other and being unruly and violent. Gardens of prosperity woven with flowers, food of nectar, and buildings, vehicles, etc., they enjoy much happiness for a long time but are never satisfied. Asuras are afflicted because of the heavy karma of jealousy in their previous lives. By nature, they find others' prosperity even more unbearable than their own suffering, so they have pain and anger. For this reason, there is fighting and displeasure, and they are angry and harm each other because they cannot tolerate the happiness of others, and they always have immeasurable suffering that cannot be appeased. Generated by perfect virtuous deeds, there are gardens of flowers hung with nets of jewels, food of nectar, buildings, horses, elephants, vehicles, etc., and clothes, jewels, and inexhaustible happiness arising from trees like the wish-fulfilling trees of the gods, which is vast and prosperous because of the happiness of desire. Even in the six desire realms, such as the Paranirmitavasavartin, although there is much happiness and joy with the wealth of the gods, they must abandon and leave like waking from a dream, and there is the suffering of death, migration, and falling.
