The Vinaya Pitaka teaches twenty-one thousand methods of contemplating impurity. For the affliction of hatred, there are twenty-one thousand kinds of internal discord. As an antidote to this, the Sutra Pitaka contains twenty-one thousand methods of cultivating loving-kindness. As an antidote to this, the Abhidhamma Pitaka teaches twenty-one thousand methods of contemplating dependent origination. For the twenty-one thousand faults arising from the equal mixture of the three poisons, twenty-one thousand distinctions of the elements are taught. Thus it is said. The Sutra also says: Those with strong desire, contemplate impurity, flesh and blood, and skin and bones, contemplating which one is liberated. The fire of hatred is extinguished by the water of loving-kindness. Ignorance is overcome by the path of dependent origination. Thus it is said. The Divine Sutra also says: Eighty-four thousand aggregates of Dharma, such is the number. Thus it is said. The so-called Dharma gate or aggregate, some say: Making all land, stones, mountains, and rocks into paper, making all plants and forests into pens, making all water into ink, and having all sentient beings as writers, just what is written down is called one Dharma aggregate. Some say: One hundred horse-loads equal one elephant-load, one hundred elephant-loads equal one Rabten (a measure), one hundred of those is called one Dharma gate or aggregate. But the first and last two, the former is many and the latter is few, so it is impossible to calculate the number of eighty-four thousand. The former has only one gate, but the latter does not have hundreds of thousands of kotis and forty lakhs of words, so the Dharma is not gathered enough. Therefore, one should take the middle one. Or, the Dharma gate does not refer to the number of shlokas, etc., but to each different kind of Dharma, or one should examine, for each affliction that arises, what goes as an antidote, which is called one Dharma gate. Whatever basis is taken, counting from one to two, ten hundreds are a thousand, ten thousands are a lakh, eight lakhs and four thousands are called eighty-four thousand. How the teachings are gathered into twelve branches. Second, these eighty-four thousand are gathered into twelve branches of the teachings, as it says in the Kunje Gyalpo Tantra: In the Sutra Pitaka, it is also explained in twelve different ways, this is to explain its meaning.

In the Essence of Excellent Meaning, a commentary on the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita, it says: "Sutra, Verse, Prophecy, Exhortation, Cause, Simile, Birth Stories, Extensive Miracles, and Definitive Teachings are the twelve branches of scripture." Thus it is said. Among these, the Sutra section is spoken of singly, in the manner of mentioning the meaning of "of." Why is it not spoken of separately? In the Compendium of Topics, it says: "Having seen ten benefits, the Tathagata teaches the Dharma in the manner of speaking, which is easy to establish, easy to explain, easy to grasp, quickly perfects the accumulation of merit through respect for the Dharma, quickly realizes the nature of Dharma, gains faith by knowing the Buddha, gains faith by knowing the Dharma and the Sangha, touches the supreme abode of happiness in this life, and pleases the minds of the noble ones by settling matters with eloquent speech, thus entering the ranks of those called wise." The Verse section refers to the sutras themselves being chanted in verse at the beginning and end, or to understanding the meaning of the sutras through guidance, hence it is called Verse. The Prophecy section refers to prophecies about the time of death and future events after the passing away of the Shravakas, such as the White Lotus Sutra of the Excellent Dharma, or to the sutras of definitive meaning, because they separately reveal and prophesy the intention, hence it is called the Prophecy section. The Exhortation section refers to what is spoken by joining together in verses, such as the second precept: "This monk is a teacher, peaceful and free from defilements." Like that, and the third precept: "This has no sentient being of mine, nor is there life, this Dharma arises from causes and conditions." Like that, and the fourth precept: "All phenomena arise from causes." And so on, and the fifth and sixth precepts, these are appearances of delusion, like experiencing a dream. When awakened from the sleep of ignorance and delusion, there is nothing to grasp in samsara. Therefore, for some, the one without arising of wisdom is the Buddha. Like that. The Cause section, in the Vibhanga, says: It is not spoken for the sake of any particular person, but solely for the sake of the Dharma remaining.
