The so-called 'Pudgala (Tibetan: གང་ཟག་, Sanskrit: Pudgala, Romanized Sanskrit: Pudgala, literal meaning: person, sentient being), self-sufficient substantial entity,' refers to the emptiness of Pudgala. The Prasangika Madhyamaka school, however, believes that clinging to the self-sufficient substantial entity of Pudgala is a coarse form of self-grasping, not the root of all afflictions. The subtle self-grasping, which is the root of afflictions, is the clinging to the self-existence of Pudgala. Therefore, for the same object of focus, with direct opposition, the wisdom that realizes the selflessness of Pudgala must cut off the root of all afflictions; otherwise, merely realizing the emptiness of the self-sufficient substantial entity of Pudgala cannot cut off the root of afflictions. The definitive Madhyamaka school believes that the self-grasping accepted by schools below Prasangika is merely the coarse root of afflictions in their respective systems, not the subtle one. The subtle root of all faults is conceptual thought. Therefore, only the non-conceptual clear light that directly opposes it, and the self-aware wisdom of individual realization, can completely eradicate the root of faults. This must be carefully considered. Therefore, the wisdom that realizes 'I' is empty of self-nature or self-sufficient substantial entity, if combined with the accumulation of merit and perfected through prolonged practice, can eradicate afflictions from the root. Because the root of all afflictions is definitely clinging to 'I' as a self-existent or self-sufficient substantial entity. And you (the wisdom of realizing emptiness) target the same object as this (self-grasping), taking a directly opposing approach. This is because whatever targets the same root of all afflictions and takes a directly opposing approach, once it becomes proficient through prolonged practice, its opposite, the root of faults, will naturally be gradually and thoroughly destroyed. This is the view of the Svatantrika school and below. Furthermore, the wisdom that realizes all phenomena are without inherent existence, if you adorn yourself with the power of vast accumulations and perfect it through practice, you can cut off the root of the two obscurations. Because the root of afflictions—the clinging to reality—and the habitual tendencies that generate the appearance of reality established by it, etc., need to be combined with vast accumulations and dwell for a long time in the power of the emptiness of all phenomena. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because afflictions have been completely abandoned, there is no need for any other antidote to abandon them. This is the view of the Prasangika school. Furthermore, the non-conceptual wisdom that is free from elaboration, when cultivated in conjunction with the accumulation of merit and becomes supremely familiar, it is reasonable that it can perfectly counteract the two obscurations. In general, afflictions such as attachment and aversion, and in particular, the clinging to 'I' as being independent and inherently existent, as well as the seeds of habitual tendencies that generate the appearance of reality, etc., all arise from conceptual thought. Therefore, to destroy such conceptual thoughts, only the non-conceptual wisdom of emptiness and clarity, free from all artificiality, is the most excellent, because other artificial minds can never destroy artificial conceptual thoughts. This is our own system. Furthermore, all the concentrations from the worldly first dhyana to the fourth formless dhyana are tainted and artificial concentrations. Because from the first to the fourth dhyana, there is attachment to the nature of investigation, joy, bliss, and equanimity, respectively; and from the first to the fourth formless realm, there is attachment to the appearance of space, consciousness, nothingness, and neither existence nor non-existence, respectively. Furthermore, some concentrations that merely dwell on the deliberate suppression of conceptual thoughts are inseparable from artificiality. Because these concentrations dwell in a state of deliberately suppressing conceptual thoughts. This is pervasive, because dwelling in a deliberate state is artificial. Belonging to this category are practices such as 'naked awareness,' 'looking directly at one's own face,' and 'relying on mindfulness,' etc., which, in the writings of our own school's previous masters, are described as artificial with a tone of dissatisfaction. The nature of mind is pristine and clear awareness, you have always been present in the defiled mind of samsara. Because the nature or essence of the minds of all sentient beings has never been tainted by any defilement. That aspect of the mind-essence that has never been stained by defilement is the pristine and clear awareness. The latter is established because the mind-essence that has never been stained by any defilement is the clear awareness. Such a nature of mind, the clear awareness, you are the basis of everything.
