The Collected Teachings of Ngawang Lodro Drakpa, JNLD33, The Essence of the Three Paths of Dharma Practice The Essence of the Three Paths of Dharma Practice The Essence of the Three Paths of Dharma Practice Prostration and Promise to Compose The supreme essence of immeasurable paths, The basis of the glory of manifest realization and many qualities, The root path of boundless depth and vastness, May the sacred threefold Dharma prevail! Those closely bound by the bonds of unbearable afflictions, These wretched beings, on the excellent path of goodness, The manner of being busy with the means of going as they please, The heroic sons of the Victorious One, holding the task of entering the path! Those who rely on them, those of the Great Vehicle lineage, Awakening the good and true lineage, For the small and middling individuals, the entrance to their minds, Having first learned, the manner of practicing the path, From the ocean-like scriptures of the superiors, Taking to heart just a fraction of a drop, This is also for myself and some who share my fortune, I am happy to do it because I have a mind to help a little. Therefore, here, the source of all temporary and ultimate benefits and happiness is definitely only the true and sacred Dharma. The term 'Dharma' refers to properly transforming one's own mind-stream and then practicing the Dharma. For this ordinary consciousness, which has no room for laziness and distraction, one must carefully restrain it from all sides with mindfulness, so that the mind can effortlessly engage in the true meaning and gain mastery, without the mind's changes being lost to the outside. Because, if we do not properly tame our minds from afflictions, there is no way to accomplish the true Dharma. Therefore, here, regarding the subject to be discussed, first, one must generate a mind of renunciation towards samsara, in the middle, one must cultivate the mind with relative Bodhicitta, and finally, one must turn the mind towards the ultimate Dharma-nature and practice. It is divided into these three ways. First, it is divided into the actual way of practice and the way of examining reality. The first is further divided into the way of learning the Dharma in advance and the way of actually generating the mind of renunciation. The first is further divided into two Dharmas that reverse the mind's attachment to this life and two Dharmas that reverse the mind's attachment to the happiness and prosperity of future samsara. The first is divided into the ways of meditating on the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment and the impermanence of death. The first is that, in general, when starting to enter the Dharma, one must relax one's body, speech, and mind, and let the mind abide in a calm state. If the body and mind are all in a state of busyness and noise, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ལང་པ་

Like a beginner, even if he presumptuously thinks he has focused his attention on the correct meaning, 4-256 at that time, it is inevitably difficult to determine the object of focus and keep it in mind. Therefore, first calm your mind and then contemplate as follows: This mind's conceptualization, whether it belongs to the past, present, or future, is it unnecessarily distracted by activities such as walking, sitting, and lying down, and is it defiled by negative thoughts such as attachment and aversion? Carefully observe and contemplate this. If the mindstream is disturbed by any such negative thoughts, immediately recognize this clearly, and then completely abandon these sinful thoughts from your mind. At this moment, firmly grasp the meditation object that is suitable for you, and single-mindedly abide in that state. Use this as the basis for focus, and think like this: Now I am not born in the eight states of unfreedom (referring to hell, hungry ghosts, animals, long-lived gods, borderlands, wrong views, muteness, and worldly cleverness—translator's note) where there is no opportunity to practice Dharma. I have the favorable conditions to practice Dharma, I have obtained a human body, I am born in the central land where the Dharma flourishes, etc., the five personal endowments, and the five endowments dependent on others, such as the Buddhas appearing in the world and teaching the Dharma. This leisure and endowment of a human body, which possesses all ten endowments, is more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel that can accomplish all inner and outer benefits. Being able to obtain such an opportunity at once is also due to the power of the pure virtuous roots accumulated in the past. Thinking that I have accomplished such merit, I feel very fortunate. In general, the number of evil destinies is very large, and the number of good destinies is very small. In particular, the human body that can practice Dharma is rarer than the stars in the daytime. From the aspects of ratio, quantity, and cause, it is extremely rare. Now that I have obtained a human body with leisure and endowment once, I must definitely extract the essence from it no matter what. If you cannot extract the essence, then indulging in worldly affairs will ultimately not lead to any meaningful essence. Therefore, in order to obtain ultimate happiness, there is nothing else to seek except the pure Dharma. Since the favorable conditions for practicing Dharma are well-arranged in all aspects, both internally and externally, if you do not devote all your energy to the Dharma in this life, then you will lose even greater benefits. Therefore, now you must strive to work hard for your own benefit. 4-257 How to extract the essence? Worldly affairs cannot bring ultimate benefit, so in order to obtain ultimate happiness, there is nothing else to seek except the pure Dharma. Since the favorable conditions for practicing Dharma are well-arranged in all aspects, both internally and externally, if you do not devote all your energy to the Dharma in this life, then you will lose even greater benefits.
