Therefore, one must strive to practice the Dharma, because such a human body is difficult to obtain again in the future, so this opportunity must not be missed. One must think this from the depths of one's heart, concentrate one's thoughts in one direction, and persevere for a long time. Therefore, one must be certain that leisure and endowment are difficult to obtain. This firm thought can prevent us from always indulging in and clinging to the happiness and wealth of this life. Because if one has a firm understanding that only the Dharma is the most important thing in obtaining the rare leisure and endowment, then one's mind will change deeply towards the happiness and wealth of this life that is not the Dharma, and one will naturally give up attachment. Furthermore, to be certain that this leisure and endowment body is difficult to obtain many times, this firm thought can prevent those who want to practice the Dharma from being lazy and postponing the practice of the Dharma to the future. Because if one is certain that the leisure and endowment body, which has the favorable conditions for practicing the Dharma, is very difficult to obtain, and gradually realizes that it is impossible to obtain a body for practicing the Dharma again in the future, then if one has such an understanding, one will not be lazy and postpone the practice of the Dharma to the future. Second, the method of meditating on impermanence of death is: now, as before, having obtained a good human body for practicing the Dharma once with difficulty, is there a certainty that it will last for a long time? Think about this. Generally speaking, although the lifespan of the people of Jambudvipa (འཛམ་བུའི་གླིང་པའི་, meaning 'continent of rose-apple trees') is uncertain, how is one's own lifespan in particular? It is certainly uncertain. One does not know how one's previous karma is. Now, the time when we are born is generally the time when lifespan is declining, and the lifespan is particularly short, probably only sixty years old, or even about thirty years old. At this time, there are many causes of death, but very few causes of survival. Like a candle in the wind, life is very fragile, and lifespan is constantly decreasing, with no increase at all. The causes of death may occur at any time, so now thinking that there is still time to practice the Dharma is a wrong understanding. Do not follow this understanding, and do not delay the time to practice the Dharma. Like a fire on the head of a beautiful woman, or a snake falling into the arms of a coward, one cannot stay for even a moment, and must quickly strive to practice the Dharma. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One should focus on repeatedly generating the thought of deciding that it is definitely necessary, cutting off any opportunity for distraction, and constantly focusing on one object, thereby drawing certainty about the truth of impermanence of life. One must never remain in a state of laziness that is distracted elsewhere. Therefore, that firm mind that has drawn certainty about the impermanence of life is such that it reverses attachment to the pleasures and prosperity of this life, because seeing that this life is impermanent and does not last even for a moment, and has no lasting essence, one must necessarily loosen the door of attachment to this life, because attachment to the pleasures and prosperity of this life is actually reversed. Furthermore, that is such that it also prevents laziness in postponing the practice of Dharma in this life, because generally, if one finds certainty that life is short and especially that death is uncertain, and that life is sudden and there is no long leisure, then it is not appropriate to postpone the practice of Dharma to this life when there seems to be leisure later, because it is actually certain. Secondly, regarding the two Dharmas that reverse the mind from the pleasures and prosperity of samsara in the future, there are two ways to contemplate: the law of karma and its effects, and the faults of samsara. Firstly, not only is it not enough that oneself dies, but in the next world, depending on the white and black karma accumulated in the present, the results of happiness and suffering will certainly occur without fail, as stated by the All-Knowing One (sarvajña). Therefore, depending on the strength of the sins and non-virtuous deeds accumulated by oneself at this time, whether great, medium, or small, one must experience the unbearable suffering of the lower realms in accordance with their respective results without fail. Moreover, whatever contaminated virtues one has done will also create a temporary appearance of happiness in the higher realms in the future, but ultimately will involuntarily lead to suffering alone. Therefore, one must draw certainty about the truth that the causes and effects of white and black karma included in samsara are infallible, and that uncontaminated virtues will create the state of ultimate bliss without any failure. One must take great care in white and black karma, and with the desire to make detailed distinctions between what to abandon and what to adopt, one must abandon unnecessary distractions from the object of one's focus, and strive in every way to maintain a constant and correct mind. Therefore, that firm mind that has such certainty about the law of karma is such that it prevents attachment to the future.
