By treating the impossible as equal, obstacles on the path are cleared and merit arises. There are six places one cannot dare to go: fire and water, poison and weapons, dogs and cliffs, because they attack life, one cannot dare to go. This has been taught before in the time of attachment. Because of fear of gods and demons, one dares not go, one must abandon self-grasping and give everything to them. For the five nectars, because they are disgusting, one dares not go, one must recognize them as samaya substances by teaching their benefits, and then with that confidence, treat them equally. Because of shame towards sisters, one dares not be naked, etc., one must cut off the root of shame by recognizing that the six aggregates are unreal. Because of fear of slander and evil speech, and unpleasant gossip, one dares not go, one must treat fear and shyness equally by recognizing that sound is empty. Because of attachment to wealth, food, and enjoyment that one needs, one dares not give or lend them, one must practice generosity by recognizing that appearances and existence are illusory. Because one knows that everything is mind, one is happy to trample on the impossible, therefore trampling is very important. Night is the time when fear, gods and demons gather and conceptual thoughts arise. One should go when cutting doubts, removing obstacles, and enhancing merit. That is to say, the time should be chosen to go in the dark of night. If one goes anywhere during the day, there will be no fear, even if one goes with a companion, no matter where one goes or where one sleeps, there will be no fear. If there is no fear, no merit will arise, because for the cutter, there is no object to be cut. For example, it is like striking the sky with a sword, there is no term for cutting or not cutting. If there is no fear and dread from within, there is no going or not going, because it is only fear that is cut. If there is no fear, there is nothing to cut. For example, like a beast or wild animal going to a dangerous place, or a fox wandering in a cemetery, the merit of cutting does not arise. For the cutter, is it not only the state of having no object of fear and no fearer that is desired? If one thinks that is the sign of cutting, it is not. Because there is no fear from the beginning without cutting, and after cutting, both the fearer and the object of fear have been realized as emptiness and there is no fear, the meaning of these two states of no fear is different. Therefore, one should go when feeling afraid, shy, having doubts, removing obstacles, and enhancing merit. The way of going should also be careful, do not go with hatred and jealousy, do not go with old age and showing off masculinity.

One should not proceed due to lineage and fame, nor due to pride and great dharma ceremonies, nor due to reputation and desire for gain, nor due to acquisition and honor. One should proceed by being roused entirely by great faith in renunciation. Those who desire omniscience, take refuge and supplicate. Possessing supreme bodhicitta is the path for all beings to attain liberation. Thus it is said, whatever you do, first hold it with the arising of bodhicitta, whatever you do becomes the path. Whatever you do is for the benefit of beings, so when going to a solitary place to practice Chöd, contemplate the profound meaning of the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra, the place where all Buddhas of the three times have gone, the practice of the Gurus and accomplished ones. Practice this profound path, the instruction of severing the realm of demons. Cause sentient beings who have not realized to realize, cause those who have not been liberated to be liberated, cause those who have not attained perfect enlightenment to attain it. Therefore, from tonight onwards, practice this severing of the realm of demons. I beseech the Guru lineage and its retinue, the Yidam deities, all the heroes and heroines, and dakinis to bless me. I beseech you to bless me to transform adverse conditions and obstacles into the path. I beseech you to bless me to equalize happiness and suffering. I beseech you to bless me to abandon attachment to the body. I beseech you to bless me to perfect the practice of Chöd. I beseech you to bless me to quickly attain perfect Buddhahood through this path. Having prayed in this way, proceed. Some Chöd practitioners make prayers like this: I go for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. I rely on the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Whether I dwell in an empty valley, in a dilapidated house or cave, in a steep ravine or precipice, whether I dwell in a place with or without shelter, I beseech you to protect me. I beseech you to save me. I beseech you to pacify adverse conditions and obstacles. To say this is very wrong. Because it contradicts the principles of Chöd, it is not appropriate. This is a refuge of fear and protection without abandoning self-grasping. If you take refuge in the Three Jewels, even without the key instructions of Chöd, there will be no obstacles. As it says in the Essence of the Sun Sutra: "Those who go for refuge to all the Buddhas, myriads of demons cannot harm them, even if
