Meditate on the previous objects of focus, such as the Six Ornaments, entering your crown and dissolving into your heart. Accumulating merit by relying on prayers to the lineage lamas: To generate meditation, one needs to accumulate merit and purify obscurations. If one meditates without having done the preliminary accumulations and purifications, it is like dyeing a dirty woolen cloth, and genuine meditation will not arise. As it says in the sutra: "As long as the roots of virtue are not complete, one will not attain the supreme emptiness." Therefore, accumulating merit means serving the lamas and the Three Jewels to the best of one's ability. The best is to serve with devotion and prayers in actual practice. The intermediate is to fulfill the wishes of the superiors with body and speech, and to strive to purify the sins and obscurations of one's own body, speech, and mind. The lowest is material service, offering what one has in reality, or visualizing and offering what one does not have. Downwards, benefit sentient beings with body, speech, and mind, and with material possessions. Without completing the accumulation of merit, blessings will not arise, just as water does not stick to a cold stone. Purifying obscurations: In general, simply accumulating merit purifies obscurations, as good and evil cannot coexist. For example, it is like dawn breaking and darkness disappearing. However, to specifically purify obscurations, even if one cannot serve superiors or benefit inferiors, one must abandon good and bad deeds by turning one's own body, speech, and mind towards the Dharma. Therefore, asceticism, hardship, drinking water, picking up stones, keeping the single-seat vow, prostrations, and circumambulations, even if they do not benefit others, exhaust one's own obscurations by experiencing hunger, thirst, and fatigue. For example, if the dirt of a woolen cloth is not removed, no matter what dye is used, it will not show its true color. Similarly, if the dirt of one's own mind is not removed, no matter what Dharma one enters, no matter which lama one asks for meditation, genuine realization will not arise. Therefore, it is crucial to strive to accumulate merit and purify obscurations with body, speech, and mind. To make this the main cause, one should receive the transmission of refuge and prayers. Visualize in the space in front of you the root and lineage lamas, starting with Yum Chenmo (Tibetan: ཡུམ་ཆེན་མོ་), as well as yidams, heroes, and dakinis.

Meditate that all enlightened Bodhisattvas are sitting like dense clouds, and imitate me! To the Lama, Yidam, and Dakini, to the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya, to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, I respectfully take refuge. Please bless that the Dharma of the Paramitas, the intention of all Buddhas, and the ultimate truth that is not inverted, may arise in my continuum at this very moment. Recite this three times. Then, for seven days, repeat the previous four-line prayer. Day and night, diligently engage in prayer, prostrations, and circumambulations, and it is important to be more diligent in public affairs and to do your best in everything. By doing so, signs of the exhaustion of obscurations will arise, such as dullness of mind, arising of weariness, increase of faith and devotion, and remembrance of death. In dreams, you may also dream of bathing, vomiting, diarrhea, flying in the sky, wearing white clothes, or new and immaculate clothes. ཨྠིྀ (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) ༈ Searching for the Mind by Relying Solely on Reason: Before practicing meditation, it is important for the student to search for the mind. If the root of the mind is not determined, then even if you meditate, it will not be effective. Even if it is effective, faith will not arise. For example, it is like giving medicine without examining the patient's pulse, or shooting an arrow without seeing the target. There must be a target. Therefore, the method of searching for the mind should be done as follows: Alas! In the past, wandering in the three realms, wandering in the six realms, experiencing various joys and sorrows, what is the reason for that? It is because of the delusion of one's own mind. Now it is necessary to cut off the root of delusion, which is called "mind," called "awareness," called "mind." Although there are many names such as "consciousness" and "conceptual thought," its essence is only one mind. Its nature, as well as many wavering, excitement, recklessness, distraction, not remembering what should be remembered, but remembering what should not be remembered, this is what is remembered in various conceptual thoughts, so if you do not search for this mind, there is no way to practice meditation. The mind exists within oneself, so if you do not discern this, meditation will not want to arise. For example, no matter how skilled a craftsman is, if there is no material, he cannot make it. No matter how skilled a cook is, if there are no ingredients, he cannot cook. Likewise, even if the Lama is proficient in Dharma, the instructions are profound, and he is good at pointing out, if the student has not searched for the mind, the Lama cannot point it out.
