Like dew on the tip of a perennial grass. Though present now, it will quickly vanish. The Lord of Death, the Mara, is like a heron lurking to catch fish. Day and night, he constantly seeks my flaws and opportunities. The appearances of this life are like the moment of waking from a dream. Impermanent and fleeting, we must inevitably abandon them and depart. The workings of cause and effect, karma, are like the shadow of the body. They constantly follow after me. Therefore, all beings endowed with intelligence. From this very day, strive to accomplish the path to liberation. Transform worldly activities into the foundation of holiness. Always exert yourselves in virtuous Dharma. From the depths of your hearts, remember impermanence and death. Follow in the footsteps of the holy ones. Whatever activities of this life there may be. All actions are the cause of meaningless suffering. Deluding children with illusions, they are without essence. Therefore, strive to accomplish liberation and enlightenment. By abandoning activities, the sacred Dharma is naturally accomplished. By relinquishing activities, the delusion of grasping at reality is destroyed. Without activities, one crosses the river of afflictions. By being free from activities, one's own mind is naturally at ease. Whatever you contemplate, it is impermanent and without essence. Wherever you look, it is the nature of change and transformation. However you examine it, the appearances of this life are illusory. Whoever is not attached to them is wise. From today, turn your mind away from this samsara. From this moment, enter the supreme great path of liberation. From this day, spend your days and nights with diligence. In this very moment, you will cross the river of suffering. Beings are deluded by the power of delusion. From that, what can be liberated from what? For the sake of practicing the sacred Dharma, strive to practice diligently. Higher realms and definite goodness are certain to be accomplished. Changing and impermanent, the appearances of this life are changing. Those who do not understand change will become miserable. Because of change, aversion arises, and one desires liberation. Meditate on the unchanging meaning, and you will be liberated from existence. From the distinct differences between awareness and ignorance. Different ways of acting manifest, as well as various kinds of happiness and suffering. Appearances, existence, the container and its contents are deluded by the grasping of subject and object. Recognizing this as illusion, and realizing it, is the mark of the wise. Day and night, make the most of your precious human life. In any case, plan to depart quickly. From now on, strive to practice the sacred Dharma. Rely on faith, diligence, and mindfulness. Even though this life is impermanent and quickly passes away. Because you see the other shore, you always cling to what is true. Like clinging to unripe fruit.

Thus it is. The suffering of afflictions from the scorching sun ceases with craving. Due to the power of ignorance, sentient beings in samsara are tormented by the burning suffering of the three fires. Wandering in the endless expanse of existence, it is rare for anyone to seek the enlightenment of liberation. Alas! Dear friends, even if you have obtained the leisure and endowment, which of the two, the appearance of tomorrow and the next life, will come first, can I be sure? What will one do at the time of death, and who will one rely on at that time? Therefore, whether one dies now or unexpectedly, whatever can be accomplished, strive for virtue today. The life of the living is seized by the Lord of Death, the Mara; the flourishing youth is seized by the disease of time; the flowing breath is seized by the demon of the Lord of Death; the appearance of this life is seized by the pressure of time. Therefore, since there is no certainty when one will die, who with understanding will increase craving for lands, places, enjoyments, and so forth, and for the impermanent, illusory aggregates? Into the river of suffering of ignorance and rebirth, forcibly entering the nature of samsara, the wise, for the sake of thorough understanding, should abandon attachment to this life of the world. There is nothing permanent in this world. The container world, the four continents, Mount Meru, and the pleasure gardens of the desire gods of the sun, moon, stars, together with all the abodes of meditation, when the seven fires and one water are scattered by the wind, not even a remnant the size of a hair tip remains, the place of peace is empty, and it becomes one space. Spring, summer, autumn, winter, and spring, years, months, dates, and numbers change in an instant, like yesterday, today, and tomorrow shifting. Thus, in all the world on earth, the grasses, trees, flowers, medicinal fragrances of summer, and all the tiny sentient beings, see how they wither and disappear in winter. Sentient beings, the essence, are impermanent and changing. When I remember, among the people on earth, many elders, youths, and contemporaries have passed away. Parents, friends, relatives, servants, and attendants, from any household, from among those who gathered together, most have passed away, and impermanence increases sorrow. Though a few remain, some have gone to other places. One remains alone now, and so forth. Within a hundred years, the people who have passed away, constantly accumulating wealth and possessions with hope, will leave them behind, and flesh and bones will separate.
