Like seeing a clay sheep, they only pursue their own interests, even if it harms others. This contradicts virtuous behavior, and my heart feels sorrow. In the past, they would listen to sincere advice, but now no one listens to the truth. Flattery and sowing discord are like nectar to the ears. This contradicts the sacred path, and my heart feels sorrow. In the past, they would respect parents and elders, but now there is no respect or service for elders. They are placed at the end of the line, and given leftover food and clothing. Because they treat this as a shameful thing, my heart feels sorrow. In the past, they would repay kindness, but now people repay good with evil. They give great help but bring great harm. Seeing that such people are not to be associated with, my heart feels sorrow. In the past, they would examine the nature of everything, but now people are easily agitated and like to spread rumors. They do not discern good from evil, and follow after fame. Because there is too much fabrication and flattery, my heart feels sorrow. These and countless other faults are the nature of beings in the degenerate age. Speaking only a part, one can only see a part. To speak in detail, even until the end of the kalpa, it would not be enough. Seeing these things, faithful people should practice the Dharma in secluded places. From the chapter on being weary of the times, it speaks of being weary of ordinary places, this is the first chapter. Thus, the thoughts and actions of the world, all people, because of their inherent stupidity, take them to be true. But those who have entered the path of liberation, those who seek the Dharma, listen to my account of being weary of the degenerate age. The source of benefit and happiness for gods and beings, the Dharma, like the eye of the world, is about to close. Spiritual friends, guides on the path of liberation, have mostly passed away. The Bodhi tree is old, and my heart feels sorrow. The places where the Buddhas of the past attained enlightenment, such as Bodh Gaya (Vajrasana), and other sacred lands are empty. Sinful Mongols surround them on all sides. It has become a depressing place, and my heart feels sorrow. Wherever one goes, there are few virtuous spiritual friends, and those who practice according to the Dharma are very rare. Monasteries and nunneries are like secular villages. Because they do many things that are not Dharma, my heart feels sorrow. Although they claim to be Khenpos and teachers, they lack both the practice and knowledge of the Dharma. They have abandoned small households, but are caught up in greater worldly distractions. They take illusory appearances to be real, and my heart feels sorrow.
