Since there is no establishment or elimination, nothing is established in either samsara or nirvana. As it says in the *Ratnakuta Sutra*: "O Light Protector, the realm of naturally pure essence is neither samsara nor nirvana, because it is without substance." From the state where nothing whatsoever is established, with the power of unceasingly arising radiance, if recognized, it is nirvana; if not recognized, the illusion of samsara appears like a mirage. As it says in the *Doha*: "Mind itself is the seed of all things, from which arise samsara and nirvana." Since nothing is established anywhere, an example is given to illustrate how things arise: Like a clear mirror, images arise; from the moment of arising, they are not cut off from anywhere. On the surface of the mirror, where there is no black or white, both black and white arise, and it is the same. Knowing this, one becomes wise in all things. The clear surface of the mirror is not established as any image, but it serves as the basis for arising. Although black and white appear, they are not established as black and white. As an example, the clear mirror-like awareness is also not established anywhere, but it is the basis for arising. From the moment the appearances of samsara and nirvana arise, one should know that awareness is not tainted. This means that even if appearances arise, if one does not deliberately taint them with grasping, it is impossible to be stained by illusion. Transcending acceptance and rejection, one is called a great yogi who is skilled in the natural flow of awareness. The lord of yoga, Tilopa, said: "Appearances do not bind, but clinging binds. Naropa, cut off clinging!" Shantideva also said: "Here, seeing, hearing, and knowing are not to be negated. Whatever, wherever, becomes the cause of suffering, the clinging to truth is what must be reversed." Like that. Second, the nature of what is to be purified. Impure illusion is the illusory appearance of samsara, appearing from clinging to duality as two. The illusory appearances of the container and its contents, together with illusory thoughts, are stains that obscure the realm of the clear light of the nature of awareness. From the cause of arising, the truth of suffering, the result, appears. Third, the method of purifying them is: using the illusion of skillful means as an antidote, which is the path. In the four paths of accumulation, preparation, seeing, and meditation, by accumulating the two accumulations and practicing in stages, one purifies.

It is what clears away cloud-like stains to be purified. Regarding this, in the small accumulation path, one cultivates the four mindfulnesses; in the medium, the four perfect abandonments; and in the great, the four legs of miraculous power. In the joining path, in the heat and peak positions, one cultivates the five faculties; in the forbearance and supreme dharma positions, the five powers; in the seeing path, the seven branches of enlightenment; and in the path of meditation, the eightfold noble path, which are the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. Abiding in the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, and in the two stages of generation and completion, where will one proceed on the suchness of the path? Therefore, since the stages of the grounds and paths are extremely precious, I will briefly mention them. From the perspective of the sutras, it is just as it is. From the Sutra of Steadfast Intellect: Steadfast Intellect asked: "Blessed One, how should the four mindfulnesses be cultivated?" The Blessed One replied: "Steadfast Intellect, in this, a bodhisattva cultivates the mindfulnesses of contemplating the body as the body. What are they? Examining the body's past, future, and present occurrences separately, one realizes, 'Alas, this body is born from causes and conditions, impermanent and changing, like an illusion.' One should not regard this body as 'I,' and one should extract the essence from this body, which is without essence. The essence to be extracted is the attainment and accomplishment of the body of the Tathagata. This is the mindfulness of the body. Steadfast Intellect, what is the mindfulness of contemplating feelings as feelings? Whatever the feeling may be, one rejoices in pleasant feelings, becomes angry with painful feelings, and becomes confused with feelings that are neither. One should tame all one's feelings, making them like illusions, without inherent existence, and teach the Dharma to cut off the feelings of all sentient beings. Why is that? Because realized feelings are happiness, and unrealized feelings turn into suffering. Therefore, knowing all objects and mental activities, and all that is labeled as Dharma, to be like illusions is the mindfulness of feelings. Steadfast Intellect, what is the mindfulness of contemplating the mind as the mind? The mind arises and ceases, and is incomprehensible.

That place also being exhausted and not abiding anywhere, the mind does not see the mind. Therefore, the characteristic of the mind is like an illusion, and one should abide in that which is without characteristics and separate (from all). That is mindfulness of the mind. Sharavati, what is mindfulness of the Dharma by following the Dharma? It is that one does not perceive even a particle of Dharma established as Dharma other than emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Seeing and abiding in that Dharma, one sees the true nature of Dharma. One does not see what is not Dharma as true and follow it. That is called mindfulness. Sharavati, all the Dharmas that the Buddhas have designated are merely names. Because those names and Dharmas cannot be found either internally or externally, and because they are unattainable, boundless, and unestablished, that is mindfulness of the Dharma. Sharavati asked, "How should one observe the four correct abandonments?" The Blessed One replied, "Sharavati, what is the path of a Bodhisattva? For the sake of not generating unwholesome and unwholesome Dharmas that have not yet arisen, one generates desire, makes effort, exerts diligence, holds the mind, and establishes it correctly. For the sake of abandoning unwholesome and unwholesome Dharmas that have arisen, one generates desire, makes effort, exerts diligence, holds the mind, and establishes it correctly. For the sake of generating wholesome Dharmas that have not yet arisen, one generates desire, makes effort, exerts diligence, holds the mind, and establishes it correctly. For the sake of generating wholesome Dharmas that have not yet arisen, and for the sake of those that have been generated to abide, and for those that abide to increase, not to decline, and not to be consumed, one generates desire, makes effort, exerts diligence, holds the mind, and establishes it correctly. Sharavati, what are called unwholesome and unwholesome Dharmas? They are the opposing sides of morality, samadhi, and wisdom. The opposing sides of morality are the deterioration of morality and the Dharmas that lead to the deterioration of morality. The opposing sides of samadhi are those that distract the mind and lead to the deterioration of samadhi. The opposing sides of wisdom are the deterioration of views and holding views as supreme.
