Like space, without self, this enlightened way has been shown. Thus it is widely said. Secondly, to decisively determine the emptiness of one's own mind, which is inseparable from bondage and liberation, as a great severance of the root, there are two aspects: a general presentation through examining the three places of arising, abiding, and going; and a specific ascertainment through examining one and other. The first is: Although the nature of liberation is like space, if one does not examine it inwardly, one remains stuck in the speculation of "Is it so?" Thus, empty meditation becomes like a blind stone. Because one does not realize the naked, clear essence, one cannot distinguish between samsara and nirvana. In order for realization to arise as definite knowledge, discriminating wisdom is necessary. As it is said, "Although there are no letters, the nature of awareness pervades everything, yet it depends on the oral instructions of the Dharma." Here, there are three things to be realized through the oral instructions of the guru: examining the place of arising and the one who arises, examining the place of abiding and the one who abides, and examining the place of going and the one who goes. The first has two aspects: the place of arising appears as various external objects, and the internal aggregates appear as form. When the mind arises in either of these two, if it arises externally, it is an external object; if it arises internally, it is the internal body. If one divides a cabbage into tiny particles and examines them, one sees that the appearing object of the place of arising does not exist. Recognizing that the mind does not arise from it, one decisively cuts off the conceptual thought of grasping the apprehended as an object, as a great rootless severance. The one who arises, if the mind and mental factors of shara ra o la la arise from themselves, then the consciousness of a moment becomes two entities. But since it has been determined that it does not arise from itself or from another, now one wonders if that place of arising arises spontaneously. If one examines color, shape, sign, characteristic, size, direction, and so on, there is nothing to be found. When what is merely conceived by thought disappears into the groundless, clear, and primordially pure state, one realizes for oneself that the conceptual thought of internal grasping is like space, without a basis. Therefore, at that time, one realizes that all grasping and apprehended, which appear as phenomena and the nature of phenomena, are without object and without support, a great liberation. Therefore, one realizes that the mind has always been without birth, and by realizing it today, one understands the meaning of the great freedom from elaboration of the Dharmakaya. Secondly, in the middle, examine the place of abiding and the one who abides. Thirdly, in the end, analyze and examine the place of going and the one who goes in the same way.

Touching the intent, inside and outside are without place, awareness is without support. Grasping and the grasped are without basis. Having understood the meaning of uninterrupted equality, without cultivation, meditation arises spontaneously as great equality, like a continuous stream. As it says in the Madhyamaka: "The mind's place of first arising, the place of abiding in the middle, the place of final going, thus, by examining these three, one purifies the mind and knows the nature of mind." At that time, all appearances in the external world are empty and clear, appearing without basis. In the inner mind, all thoughts arise and dissolve spontaneously, without leaving a trace. Seeing appearances and mind as unrelated and completely transparent, this is called the intention of exhausting phenomena arising in the exhaustion of mind. This is spoken in the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra: "O Keeper of Light, bodhisattvas, great beings, engage in diligence to completely search for the mind. That mind is not found externally, nor is it found internally, nor is it found between the two. It is not blue, nor is it yellow, and so forth. Among all diligences, the most supreme is the diligence to completely search for the mind." Thus it is said. Second, examining one and different is the instruction for demolishing the house of mind. That is, if this so-called mind exists, from what cause does it arise? If it does not exist, then what is this wheel of movement and memory? Upon what conditions do these aspects of memory arise? If there are no conditions, then these sudden memories are unreasonable. If this mind is one with the body, then when the body disintegrates, the mind should also disintegrate. If it is not one, then there is no certainty of going and coming, and the body's illnesses will come upon the mind. The cycle of past and future lives is also unreasonable. If this so-called mind is one, then when the senses of one being cease, other beings should also die. If it is not one, then just as the forms of beings are different, the minds of beings should also be different entities. If they are different, then all the creatures such as worms inside one body should live and die at the same time as one person. If it is one, then how is it that there are countless internal and external beings in one body? If this mind has a place to return to, then first there must be a cause. Cause
