From... it is said, "Alas! The self-originated wisdom, pure from the very beginning, transcends the limits of yes and no." And, "For me, it is the perfection of not abandoning emptiness." So it is said. From the beginning, wisdom has been naturally established and abides, and how is that? It is like this: Uninterrupted wisdom, spontaneously accomplished Buddha, the nature of reality free from elaboration, awareness free from extremes, the appearance of great purity, a view without partiality, fresh and clear, unchangeable, wisdom that does not cease, the nature of reality that does not err, the outer boundaries do not break, the five lights of inner wisdom do not fade, abiding in the essence of body and wisdom. This is what is said in "Self-Arisen." Thus, on that basis, whatever arises in samsara and nirvana, the terms of accomplishment and non-accomplishment, delusion and non-delusion, are free from such designations, and wisdom abides in the three without increase or decrease. Although the way it abides is inconceivable, wisdom is of three kinds. It is said, "In the essence of pure wisdom, there are three: essence, nature, and compassion." And, "In the Union of Sun and Moon, there are three wisdoms that abide as the basis: the wisdom of essence-purity, the wisdom of self-existing spontaneity, and the wisdom of compassion's self-appearance." So it is said. In "Destruction," it is said: "In the wisdom of essence-purity, there is no existence called ignorance, there is no number called one or two. In the undivided nature of reality, there is nothing established merely as wisdom. The wisdom of self-existing spontaneity, does not arise or cease, do not think otherwise, because the objects are not definite. Because skill and qualities are without cessation, it appears merely as play, the basis for the perfection of all things. In the wisdom of all-pervading compassion, it is the door through which endless varieties appear, appearing like activity, perfect in essence. In the nature of the empty dharmakaya, wisdom and knowledge are completely perfect, naturally appearing to sentient beings. Without this, samsara and nirvana are cut off at the navel, known and clear through knowledge." So it is said. In "Six Spaces," it is said: "Wisdom itself, in three ways, shows the distinctions of the basis in words. With the wisdom of essence-purity, it is free from the stain of ignorance. With the wisdom of self-existing spontaneity, it is free from the harm of deluded words. With the wisdom of all-pervading compassion, everything appears connected to the expanse." So it is said. Therefore, it does not depart from the three: essence, nature, and compassion. In "Destruction," it is said: "In the essence of self-appearing wisdom, there is no separation in the way of the three."

Thus it is. From the very beginning, it is empty and clear, empty and clear and unchanging. It does not fall into any extreme of permanence or annihilation, existence or non-existence, affirmation or negation, clarity or obscurity. As it says in Rangshar: "Beyond the extremes of permanence and annihilation." As it says in Rangdrol: "The four extremes and defilements are self-purified." Thus it is. Therefore, before the division into samsara and nirvana, the way the basis, the essence of reality, abides is: it dwells as the essence of the three kayas and five wisdoms. Having shown the way the basis abides, now, from that which transcends the delusion and non-delusion of the basis, the delusion into samsara and nirvana is that Kuntuzangpo Buddha attained enlightenment without doing even a hair's breadth of virtue, and sentient beings wander in samsara without doing even a hair's breadth of sin. This is because they have not recognized the spontaneously present wisdom of the basis, which was shown above, as their own manifestation, and thus they are deluded. As it says in Klongsal: "From wisdom itself, ignorance is deluded." Again, it says in the same text: "The colors of wisdom are the five elements. From the very beginning, they are only wisdom itself. Without separation, they are deluded by ignorance." Therefore, without recognizing the essence, nature, and compassion as non-dual and transparent, and like the back and front of a hand, the cause of knowing and not knowing is the same. Because wisdom is not recognized as its own manifestation, knowing is deluded into not knowing. Delusion arises from non-delusion. This is primordial purity. This means that at the time of arising, there is no distinction between delusion and non-delusion. The essence, nature, and compassion are actually present, but due to ignorance, the three—cause, condition, and result—arise. Because the appearance of objects is not recognized as dharmata, there is delusion. As it says in Thalgyur: "That one cause, the root without a maker, because it is not recognized as one's own face, this is the beginning of samsara." On the basis, the clear aspect of awareness stirs as the five lights. The wind of karma, the condition of awareness, makes the colors appear as light spheres. Because that is not recognized as wisdom, in the aspect of dualistic appearance, consciousness is deluded, and the delusion of subject and object arises. For example, it is like a conch shell appearing yellow. From the very beginning, the spontaneously present wisdom has the appearance of duality, so if you ask where the delusion comes from, as it says in Mutik Trengwa: "Because it is accompanied by partless particles, even clear light is imprinted with habit." The grasping of dualistic appearance is mind. From that comes ignorance. Again, as it says in Klongsal: "In the six objects of clear wisdom, the mind of dualistic grasping arises." Thus it is. So how does it arise? Wisdom
