Each, in terms of the boundless activity-space, is equivalent to one great kalpa. Above the sixteen abodes of the Form Realm, the life of Akanistha can last for sixteen intermediate kalpas. Below, each one, residing in the Brahma realm through activity, can live for one intermediate kalpa. Above the six desire realms, the life of Paranirmita-vasavartin is six small kalpas, and decreasing sequentially downwards, the life of the Four Great Kings is one small kalpa. The lifespan of nagas and the first hell is one small kalpa, the second and third hells are intermediate kalpas, the fourth and fifth are superior kalpas, the sixth and seventh are great kalpas, and the eighth is said to be the extent of the world's destruction. Humans are generally considered to have a lifespan of one hundred years, according to the approximate calculation during the time when the Buddha's teachings are taught. Asuras and pretas are also said to have a lifespan of one hundred years, each measured by their own breath. That is, twelve human years are one day for asuras, thirty days make a month, twelve months make a year, and calculating one hundred years in this way, the lifespan of asuras is 432,000 human years; one human month is one day for pretas, thirty days make a month, and so on as above, effectively stating that the lifespan of pretas is 3,000 human years. Furthermore, the measure of a kalpa as stated in the Kalachakra is: eight thousand bows is the measure of one yojana. A pit of equal water width is filled completely with water as wide as the tip of a hair, and every hundred years one hair tip is removed. When all the hair tips are exhausted, it is considered one day, and that day is counted as a month and a year. When one hundred years are completed in this way, it is a small kalpa. That small kalpa is counted as days, months, and years, and after one hundred years, it is an intermediate kalpa. The intermediate kalpa is counted as one day, and after one hundred years, it is a superior kalpa. The superior kalpa is counted as one day, and after one hundred years, it is said to be a great kalpa. The detailed method of calculating the duration of these kalpas in terms of human years is clearly and extensively explained in the 'Kalachakra Four Commentaries' by Akshobhya-pada and by Drukpa Lha Blo, the direct disciple of Je Pundarika, who is also my guru in the lineage of astrology. I myself have explained it elsewhere before, and it can be understood from that.

Thus, a brief account has been given of how the world realm initially arises and abides in the middle. The way the world is finally gathered up is similar to the way it happens in the inner body. The elements become confused in their powers and lose their strength, so earth dissolves and merges into water. Water merges into fire, and fire into wind. That also dissolves into space, remaining in a state of great emptiness, and then again, as before, the entire world realm of conventional dependent arising is completely formed. Regarding the manner in which the world is gathered up, this is just a brief section, as I have not seen it explained in detail by others before, so I would also like to explain it separately in more detail. Moreover, this world, from the time it has not been established since the beginning, appears unimpeded in the self-sound of its own nature of clear light as a play of dependent arising. For the various inclinations, thoughts, and intelligence of the beings to be tamed, the victorious ones, endowed with skillful means and great compassion, in order to tame them accordingly, make the meaning of averting impure consciousness, refuting wrong attachments, and relying without attachment to anything, generating joy in accordance with the faculties and realms, showing that contradictory separations are not established in themselves, and that the objects of attachment are not established as illusions without contradiction, and so on, are immeasurable. Who can measure the nature of the secret, inconceivable nature? However, the words of the Tathagata, from the correct measure, how the various terms are spoken, taking whatever is in accordance with one's own inclination, one attains the meaning of the Tathagata. Thus, even so, it is the definitive meaning, namely the mantra vehicle. From the great tantras of mantra, there are various parts and clear displays of the world realm. From other terms, the three outer, inner, and other are combined and arise extensively. This is the system of the glorious Kalachakra, so one should also hold it with great respect. Thus, the newly translated mantra tantras, the ultimate secret tantras of all crowns, the non-dual glorious Kalachakra, which speaks well of the outer, inner, and other, in the tantras and commentaries on the ten bhumis, the outer Kalachakra world realm, the views of pure and wise scholars, the many ones and many natures, through the power of seeing well without mixing, one obtains the key to various practices, opening the door of clear wisdom.
